As promised here are the pics plus some brief explanations of what I was doing. Hopefully this is helpful to others.

With the bull gear and bearing removed (wrapped in paper towels and set aside) you can get to he large retaining ring. Odd on the other side this was two half circle clips that just cam off when the gear was removed. This side had single spring clip. Was a bear to get off, I like the two halves better.

Here is the recessed area on the gear where the retaining ring rides:

axle assembly removed from housing and disassembled:

the old seal:

cleaned seal housing and applied RTV to outer seal edge of the new seal:
edit: forgot to mention that the separate edge I'm holding onto turns so don't apply any there.

seal started:

I used the bearing with the snap ring to drive the seal. this makes it easy to get the seal at the exact depth:

Clean off excess RTV with paper towel:

when RTVing the seals I use the smallest bead i can make with the RTV applicator tip and then use my finger to smear it:

bearing and tube spacer back on the shaft. decided to use a little rtv on each side of the paper gasket for good measure:

Bolted back on the housing:

retaining ring, gear, and bearing back on the shaft. and the housing back on:

finish reassembly and done. I like to wait until the next day for the rtv to cure before refilling with oil.

thanks, I was wondering how hard was it to get the bull gear off ? Did you pry it off or need a puller?
also was the housing hard to remove?
thanks in advance

The bull gear just slides on, no puller needed. But if i remember correctly some soft taps with a rubber hammer helps.

The housing is bulky. a jack under the housing is a big help to take it off and line it up when putting it back on. A second person also helps when lining it back up.

Found this very helpful Texan . Thank you. I'm surprised to see no brake shoes in this tear down. Ya think they would be some where near here.

your correct, the wet type (runs in oil) brake disc would be behind the pinion gear. you can see the gold colored bolts holding a plate on in the pic of the housing.

Our 2810 has been doing great.. this repair was done about 4yrs ago. doesn't leak a drop :)

What a pain in the neck to get to if one had to replace discs. The old JD I used to own had an exposed plate to unbolt and the pads were right there. They were of the dry type however.
