Care to guess on a truck problem?

I think I would 'chase' the ground first then take a good long hard look at the solenoid. Besides, solenoids are way cheaper than starters.

The battery cables can become corroded and cause problems as well...I've had similar problem resolved by replacing cable. Thus, I'm betting it is either bad cable or bad connection. Am awaiting to hear what is found, although if multiple components are done at once, may never actually know the problem, which is very likely a single component.

Yeah, I'd check both ends of both cables first, then solenoid, the starter would be the last thing. It's not only cheaper looking for a fix that way, it does the easy checks first.

I pretty much ditto everyones comments so far that you really need to get in there with a meter and do some checks.

There is a great forum called dodgetalk too.

Hi If you have a voltmeter (not test light) you need to do a VOLTAGE DROP TEST on the starter /battery cables. this will check them for actual(dynamic) resistance not just static resistance as ohm meter would. Just Google/search Online for proper procedure .Takes only moments to test each wire & you don't have to disconnect anything. This is from 30yrs. as electrical automotive technician. Save time ,energy & find your possible bad connection. I will check back here shortly if you have any questions. Hope this helps.

With all due respect I don't remember ever having a solenoid go bad. I have replaced more than my fair share of starters over the years.

To the OP- it's always nice to see somebody willing to help out their neighbor.

I used to own a '

96 one ton dodge and it came with a 2X4 from a skid . the person I purchased from explained that the contacts inside started will fail but just "thump" the starter with this skid and will work until again fail.
Drove until 2005 and maybe 5 times had to resort using the skid.
A lot cheaper than replacing the starter.
Just for grins give it a try.
Was driving toward town and 2 men were looking into engine of dodge pick-up with hood open .so stopped to help and they explained the starter had failed to work. picked up the skid 2x4 and tapped the starter and it fixed the problem. They said will get there own skid.

Yep, Of course it could be the starter but instead of changing out the first part, I would make measurements. It is SOOOO much easier to test than replace parts.. Lots quicker and cheaper too. The starter would be the last on my list of likely culprits.. Work smarter, not harder guys.
