Tire Selection Is there such a thing as a tire in-between R1 and R4?

II'm pretty sure this would make my 4WD very unhappy. .

My understanding of these ratios is that the fronts should turn faster than the rears. Granted, this ratio would be increased but I think the real problem occurs is when one begins to close in the ratios of front tire rotation by going larger in the front. The height of my fronts are about 29". Theoretically, any tire no matter what the tread design that is this height (or even slightly less) and able to fit on the rim is a doable entity. Make sure you match "ply" ratings as well.

Like a loader type tire with more bite?
Dont know where you are starting out, but if you have R! rims you have a lot of R1 option types. The trick Im thinking is to mix them to your advantage. 4wd is a complication when you start making changes.

Altho one would assume that there is a standard, Iv observed that some mfgs end up with a tire that is somewhat smaller dia width for width than that of another mfg or a different tire line. Illustrating this, Firestone makes the SAT II in 8 ply. Compared to the Firestone "Trasction Field & Road" that the Kub 3450 came equipped with, the SAT II is equal tread width but even NEW is over an inch smaller in dia. The opportunity exists to make changes in tire sizes - say to a stronger wider front tire that is only slightly larger diameter and thus does not cause excessive lead in the front drive.

I have heard that BKT AGs are a little smaller in dia as well.

After some googling, it seems I'm thinking of a tire like this. Wide and flat-ish like a loader with an ag pattern.

But that's a giant Trellborg combine tire. Just found it interesting.

Thank everyone so much for information on the technical aspects/ definitions I didn't know about. I have a much better base knowledge solving my tire problems now.

The Firestone SAT II is squared off similar to that. The tread bulges outward less than normal when inflated.

Excellent. Will definitely check out that model. Thank you so much.

There is, of course, R3 tires; used primarily for turf with better traction.

My experience is difference. I'd say Some tires work with your 4wd ratio and some don't. It surprised me how much the rolling circumference varied on tires that had pretty close to the same tread height. Enough to make a noticible difference in how the 4wd must be stressing the drivetrain because it sure made a difference in how easily it shifted into and particularly out of 4wd. If the difference in RC in the specs doesn't convince you there's something to this RC thing, you can measure the RC by putting wet paint splotches on the tire and driving down the road and then measure distance between the splotches. That's gives you real RC, not a substitute. Some day when nothing else matters, measure it for yourself on a couple of similar tires and see what you find.
