I got one more question. I am doing the right side. is there anything hooked to brake linkage inside the axle housing I need to look at before removing housing, is there something that needs disconnected inside.
thanks

Im trying to remember because I did do the right side also on ours. the right side also has the differential lock mechanism so that would be one more linkage to disconnect. As far as the brake linkage goes the is nothing more to do than disconnect the external linkage. the internal brake parts are self contained.

Wish i would have taken pics when i did the right side.. sure would help me jog my memory lol

thanks, I talked to mech at dealer today, he said the dif. lock is a fork like piece, not real fun puting back together, he said to use some thick grease to hold in place while putting back together.,i might take some pictures for other to go by.

Interesting read,

I'd rather be in the seat than fixing them, but my machines on average have thousands of hours.

My new Max28 is not near as stout as the 2810. The Max 28 Axle cover housings are cast Aluminum. large brackets spread the 3Pt hitch attach points, but I bet a good wack and the castings break.

I know certain aluminum castings depending on the metallurgy can be stronger than cast iron. But this type of casting tends to be expensive. If these companies did this as a cost saving feature, then I do not think it's the aforementioned type casting. It was one of the main reasons I shied away from the comparable JD products or 3000 series. I use my 3 pt hard and bring my tractor into some awful ground obstructed and rock strewn places all while carrying a ton or more of tree stems and unfounded or not, I preferred the iron offering.

How did you seal the housing to the tractor. RTV or is there a seal there too?

good job of documenting steps for other owners.

I must be looking at this picture wrong or misunderstanding this -because it looks like red RTV was applied to a lip seals interior surface???http://api.viglink.com/api/click?fo... thread&txt=http://i40.tinypic.com/vs04yt.jpg

if so- it will try to adhere to the axle shaft and once it tries to rotate? destroy the seal...

Great this is a year old plus thread:laughing:

This is a two piece seal, the actual sealing surface in on the inside of the seal. So the rtv to the shaft helps seal that surface as well as make sure the shaft does not turn inside the seal, but to grip and turn the inner seal.
