Question about a rotary cutter modifications

I just bought a countrypride 5 ft rotary cutter . Its in good shape , but for some reason the guy he bought the property from welded a blocker plate on the front where it first goes over the material , and the rear where it would discharge . I am wondering if this was done for a specific purpose ?

Probably to keep things from getting tangled in it.

I've seen chains added in those areas to keep debris from flying out but never seen a solid plate.

Why the front would be blocked is got me wondering , it makes it harder to go over a small tree and pushes the brush down

Maybe it was done so it would mulch the material better??? That's all I got.

Yes. This causes a serious performance problem with a bushog. Unless youre cutting just grass and the bh has good suction the low skirt in front will destroy utility. For good cutting the blade should swing 2 or more inches below the skirt. The back one is not so important if you dont cut in reverse. ... Safer with the skirt tho. Chains are the best safe option. They dont affect the utility much at all while inhibiting thrown debris appreciably.
