stolen cattle

Shut who up about what? I just wasn't around if ya mean me...

My point was as long as you are around, you may know the count is off in a 30 acre field, but knowing exactly how many it is off can be difficult. Lots of farmers locally have many adjoining areas and they move them every so often which is really the only time they get a good count and will know X number are missing. Most will move them from one area to another when they think the count is off just to be sure.

I hope the guy gets his cattle back.

Even in the summer when the cattle were out on pasture in large pastures up to 400 acres we counted every time we checked them which was at least once a week. I'm sorry but anybody who does not recognize that 21 out of 150 are missing isn't paying attention. Still it is a sad situation. As the price of beef goes up the incentive to steal grows and it has risen a lot in the past couple of years.

No not you. If you read the link from DT86 post #15 the guy has 350 acres with just a few people to look after the cattle.

If you live in an area for a long time, have low crime rates, etc.; it is easy to become complacent.

I have 53 head on about 150 acres of woods & pasture. The area I am in is hilly. The wooded area is rough terrain.

I work a full time job off the farm & my cows will get chexked & counted about 360 days out of the year. The only time I don't chevk them is if it is lightning.

If one is missing I know it. Sometimes they get in the woods to calve & I may not find them until the next day but I will look for them until it is too dark to see.

I don't know how many cows a person cold have on 30 acres and not miss 21 of them for months. :D. I still say absentee farmer. Cows not fed, maybe PETA came and got them.

Yes, this is a good option. Farmer hired someone to feed and water and that person never bothered to keep track of the herd... Different but similar story, a boarding facility near us. Absentee owners hired help to run the place. The help got a livein boyfriend who was into drugs. Before the owners realized what happened, the boarders all quit and the cops locked up the help. The help had sold off some of their equipment and all of their hay and feed.

Friend of mine is an engineer and he has invented an ear tag for cattle that allows him to find each individual animal with a drone. He can see them with the camera on the drone and also tell their body temperature. He is still working on getting it out into the market and is focusing on the really big ranches with thousands of head of cattle here in the US and also in South America.

Probably be a good system to monitor for theft too.

Like they said inside job for sure . Unfortunately even some innocent people will be suspects IMO until rustlers are caught if ever . Like someone else said I hope they get their cattle back and healthy and rustlers/cattle raiders and accomplices get " CASTRADED" by rusty knife or ball peen hammer !...................

Did you even read the story?

I read this, it was much of a "Story". Why?

==========
ROGERSVILLE — Sometime between Dec. 27, 2014 and March 15 of this year, 21 head of cattle, valued at more than $60,000, went missing from a local farm.

Hawkins Co. Sheriff’s Deputy Jamie Smith said that on April 1 he spoke with the owner, Phillip Greene, of Morristown, who said that he had walked the perimeter of the property located on Beech Grove Road, in Rogersville, and could not locate any sign of the missing cows.

Greene told Smith that he believes the cattle — registered Black Angus which have brands on the right shoulders and identification numbers tattooed in both ears and on their left rear hips -- were stolen. He believes that whoever took the animals herded them out through a corral at the pasture.

Persons who may have information regarding the rustled cattle are asked to call the HCSO at 423-272-4848.

Try this... 21 head of cattle stolen from Hawkins County farm | News - Home

The news report answers most of the questions.

The story you have there is not all the facts that DT86 had in his link. The farmer has more then 30 acres, which cows were taken and maybe why they were taken. The point is there is more to it then your "Story".

Did you read what my post was responding to? I was responding to another member who mentioned the "hypothetical" 30 acres where he lives because the link posted at that time (not by DT 86 by the way) did not mention a number of acres. The post I was responding to was BEFORE DT86 posted an updated link and about 30 acres where he lives, not where the cows were stolen.

So the answer to my question "Did you even read the story" is No. Thats all I was wondering. I thought the OP was what the topic was about. How could I have made that mistake. My mistake for not knowing how you go and post about unrelated stories in the middle of a thread. I'm Sorry, if that fits the story you may or may not be talking about.

The post I responded to that you did not read in context was BEFORE DT86 posted an updated link. Now you are getting all wrapped around the axle. I will unsubscribe from the thread so you can go on about it more if you like.
