We have an STX46 that needed a rear tire replacement. Not bad considering it is original. But the wheel was stuck on the axle so I used a stick and hammer to drive it off the axle. Problem is that before I finished the axle came out of the manual transmission. Apparently there is a clip that is supposed to retain it in the transmission.

Anyone ever taken one of these apart and repaired them? Anything I should be wary of before I split the two halves?

Thanks,
Jeff

I have repaired rear ends that the axle had come out, same as yours.
I remove the rear end from the tractor, power wash it,then set the rear end on a 5 gal. bucket. Separate the 2 halves, re-position the axle and install a new "C" clip. Reverse to re-install rear end.

That's good news to hear. Thank you! Suspecting that I will need a new c-clip since the axle came out before removing the clip. Where would I find spare parts for this since JD doesn't recommend opening it I doubt they offer spares?

Most likely there is a name on the tranny. Like spicer, or peerless. And a model number tag someplace on the case. Peerless has a metal tag that slips into a slot on the side normally opposite the brake. I don't remember where spicer is.

Get that number and we can go from there. I appears to be a snap ring retainer system. Have disassembled and repaired several of this style of tranny over the years.

I appears JD has a parts breakdown at www.jdparts.com website. put in your model number, and then click on sectional I believe and then find your tranny. Looks like they used both spicer and peerless, as well as a hydro option. but it shows parts for both the stx38 and 46 so could be for several model setups.

Randy, It's a SPICER and the model 4360-68 matches your info. But the serial number is quite a bit different than the jdparts.com. I've attached a photo of my tag. I need #47 and the drive pulley would be an added bonus.

I looks like the snap ring item 47 is part number AM122527 and the pulley on top of the tranny item 9 on the belt and idler pulley diagram is part AM104405

Does it matter that the serial numbers don't match?

The first set of number is something on the order of -xxxxxxx and the second set is xxxxxxxx- The first set means the serial number is below that number and the second set the serial number above that number. You are in the first set of serial numbers.

I do enough repairs on JD mowers that I have my own account with jdparts, and an open account with my local dealer that I have them sent to for pickup

Its nice being able to just look up my own parts, and put them in a shopping cart and then just show up at my dealer, and they hand me my bag or box of parts and walk out without even slowing down some days.

Just registered at JD and learned the parts go to a dealer. Now your statement makes sense to me. Didn't realize the parts wouldn't be shipped to me and our nearest dealer is 90 minutes round trip.

Will wait until I get the case open before ordering.

I think you can have them shipped directly to you instead of going to the dealer to pick them up. You just pay shipping instead of picking up.

Hey Randy,

Help. Removed all the T-30 Torx Bolts around the perimeter of the case and split with a screwdriver all around the case but it won't completely separate. Is there a trick to getting it to open? I'm afraid if I wedge it open any wider it will crack the aluminum.

Remove the pulley on the top and clean out all the areas under the pulley. I seem to remember that there is one or two bolts down in that area also

Makes sense and I did not yet remove that pulley. Was hoping to avoid it but I'll try it tomorrow.

It you don't find them there, they could also be on the bottom. if I remember correctly there may be two.

You may also want to consider item 39 which is the shift keys parts number AM126117 since they are a wear parts and replacement now will save you headaches down the road.

Found the last two bolts. Thank you Randy. Also found the clip I damaged trying to get the wheel off the axle. Anyone guess which one I need to replace? :D
