Tundra vs. Chevy

Checked mileage today with actual miles and a calculator, not the computer and that particular tank got 17.1mpg. Computer said 16.4mpg. Will check more soon to see how it does but we can live with that. It was about 50/50 hwy. and country driving.

We never thought we would buy a Toyota truck until we drove one a few weeks ago, it drives and handles great. Went with a new 2015 Tundra Double Cab. We looked at everything before settling on the Tundra. Chevy 1/2ton's are assembled in Mexico with some major drivetrain parts from Mexico, Ford $2-4K higher than everyone. Chevy and Dodge were coming in around $48-52K MSRP pretty much equipped the same as the Tundra. Even drove the RAM Eco-Diesel but it seemed a bit weak for us. The Tundra stickered at $42K with their added paint protection crap and stuff, got them down to $36K. It has their 5.8L V8. Got close to 1000 miles on it and so far averaging 16.4mpg, no load, with combined driving. Would have been towing calves to the sale barn today but the darn NCDOT hasn't came through with our weighted tag yet, used the '02 Chevy Tahoe Z71 instead as usual.

Sitting at my sister's home.

The youtube clip is mine. Dead stop up to about 65 windows up, this middle aged man feels 20 every time I crank mine up.

Also consider the Toyota TRD rear swaybar. It's easy to DIY install and it makes this big trucks hug corners my friend. Eliminates some body roll and is a worthwhile mod that you can do your self and not permanent if you don't like it.

My 2015 Silverado 2500HD with the gas 6.0L, Z71, and snow plow prep package being run on 4.10 diffs doesn't do too bad. It averaged 13-14 for all miles and on a couple of road trips it did 16-17. That has been only cold weather, upper midwest winds, and E15 winter fuel. Getting ready to make a trip to Memphis in May and will be able to see how it does in warmer weather and summer blend fuel. Not too bad for a 7100# 4x4 pickup. I got it mostly for hauling and only rare towing, so didn't feel motivated to go diesel with all the emissions stuff it has now. It will still have plenty of guts to pull anything I need it to do though. I know I sure like it MUCH better than the 2013 1500 I had before. ,

Thanks Copperhead. I am very interested in what you get during the warmer months. Please reply to this thread or send me a personal note. Thanks.

I have Silverado 2500HD ext. cab. 372 rear dif. best ever hyw. 19 mpg. avg. 12 to 15 with a large 4300# camper and the same with our holiday trailer which is 8000 # before my wife spends a wk. loading it before we head out. Seems to have plenty of power and maintains the speed limit on any hill without to much effort.

Excellent mileage with that load.

My brother and I both bought new 2014 model trucks last year. Him a Silverado and me a Tundra.

He's had his back for service 3 times, once of an oil pan leak, once for bad ignition components (engine skipped) and lastly for a new fuel pump.

My Toyota has been flawless. I bought it because I know of several people who have driven theirs well over 300k miles with no problems other than normal maintenance.

Reliability should be a consideration when buying.

I get 18mpg with regular overall driving. I've towed my Mahindra (Trailer and load about 7000lb) with mine, and would ever know it was there. I've towed my old Ferguson with loader/BH (about 8000lb) and it towed like a dream. I can't imagine that heavier loads would be any worse.

I know you guys are going to beat me up for this but the company I work for has a bunch of GM Avalanche trucks all less than 3 years old. We also have about 50 Duramax trucks 2011 and 2014's. Anything dually is Ford, 350 to 550.

The avalanche fleet has been hit or miss but more miss. Oil consumption is the main issue. Quite a few have had new pistons, oil pumps, cam sensors, and a few as far as new motors.

The 2011 Dmax trucks have been really good as we're the 08's we no longer have. The 2014's have had electronic gremlins and leaking oil pans on at least 3 trucks I know of.

As you can see we are on a 3 year rotation. The Avalanche trucks have been so bad they are getting replaced early. Since January 1st we have bought about 10 F150's with the 5.0 and 3 of the Rams with the Eco Diesel.

Yeap. GM, Nissan, Ford and Dodge trucks are not on the high reliability scale, per Consumer Reports. Toyota is the only one that rates positively.

Over the winter I read forums on Ford, RAM, and GM plus RV forums looking for the best solution for a one ton diesel RV tug. They all have issue and they all have histories that make you want to find another solution that doesn't exist. The Powerstroke, still can't get it right. GM's recent lost of focus to quality, and RAM with little engineering. GM had the Alison going for it and the Duramax has a reasonable reputation but not the trucks. RAM has the Cummins and the Aisin which looks to be bullet proof.

I'm just going by what I read over the last year on Internet forums, be it right or wrong, you do get a sense of what is going on with each brand. I wish I could get access to the warranty claims from each manufacture to know what is really going on and how many issues are related to folks modifying their powertrain but this info isn't available to us. In the end I choose the RAM 3500 Cummins solution. No real issues since the "death wobble" was fixed beginning with MY13.

The bottom line, regardless of the brand, they all use supplier parts and are all price competitive. Looking over this thread, all most all issues were related to parts from the supplier network. Consumer Reports is a joke, I've seen more mis-information from them, they have to be on the take or there are blind as a bat.

I could list every vehicle I bought beginning with my first new vehicle purchase in 1972, each one (except for one) had issues, for example, 1989 Ford Taurus SHO, missing bearing in the power steering pump. 2004 GMC Yukon XL, lemon lawed, to my 2003 Tahoe which I retired at 200,000 miles with nothing more than normal maintenance. It is a duck shoot to problems with any brand you buy. Go to any brand forum, take Lexus for example, read the issues, they all have them.

Selecting a new vehicle is like selecting the politician you are going to vote for, the lesser of the evils is the best you can do.
