The wife and I have been discussing teaching our 9 year daughter to shoot.

Full disclosure, neither of us are hunters and are not regular shooters. We are not anti gun or anti hunters. Shooting is not just part of our normal lives.

Seeing the recent thread on pellet guns, I was wondering about starting my daughter with pellet rifle. I had one when I was a kid and loved target shooting with it. My thinking is that the pellet gun would be an easier step than a 22--we don't have a good place for a gun range and my wife rides horses, so gun shots would be an issue.

Do you have any recommendations or feedback.

I had a pellet rifle at that age.

We built a trap and I shot it in the basement.

One of my fondest childhood memories.

Oh. And the safety I learned then keeps me safe today.

remember safety first, we all know that but children forget. safety glasses are a must kids don't understand that the pellets can come back at you.

what you get her would depend on how good quality you want, and how much you want to spend. There are several entry level pellet rifles in single/multiple pump, to breakbarrel(takes practice to shoot accurately) to PCP (precharged Pneumatic) like the benjamin/crosman discovery.

The main thing is to teach her the 4 rules of firearm safety, and keep reinforcing the rules.

We got my son his first Red Rider at 7.5 years. He enjoys it, and has learned the basics. We (me and wife) trust him (now 9 yrs) to go out side with it, without watching him like a hawk. We don't let him take it out with other kids around, cause they really dumb down in a group.

This last Christmas we got him a CO2 pistol, BB only. That was a mistake. For starters, he is responsible enough to single cock and shoot, but not to always make sure there's not a couple for BB's in mag of the pistol. It also is ridiculous how inaccurate it is. I should have gotten a multi pump BB/pellet for his second. Seems like cheap CO2 guns are really poor quality.

I have a LOT of, as in way too many, air guns. My favorite kid's starter gun is here: IZH-Baikal IZH 60 Air Rifle. Air rifles - PyramydAir.com

This is a Russian made .177 pellet gun, spring piston, side lever, with legendary accuracy. It has an amazing trigger and little to no appreciable recoil, in a very short and lightweight package. The stock is adjustable, and while it is still a bit long for my 5 year old daughter, it should fit a 9 year old, and you as well. It is very impressive and low-powered enough to be confined by rudimentary backstops, although it could be used effectively on the smallest rodents up to gophers. There is no safety. Being single shot, once you load it you must shoot it, but the shooter is always the safety anyway, and this is a good lesson to teach.

Highly recommended.

I agree the Bikals are amazing little shooters.

Why not a Red Ryder BB gun, light weight, easy to cock, inexpensive, under $50 before taxes and you can get a pink one if it is needed..

I have break barrels, pcp's, CO2's and good ole Daisy's. The pcp's are too powerful and heavy for a 9 yo girl, the break barrels are heavy, hard to cock for a kid and powerful enough to cause serious damage. The CO2's are a little better as far as weight and power.

When the grand kids come over and we shoot off the back porch, the gun they almost always reach for are the BB guns, followed by the CO2's. They will try the break barrels a couple of times then never pick them up again. Good habbits and safety can be learned on a BB gun just as well and they will have a ton of fun shooting with dad or granpa.
