I use several different models for work and all have worked exceptionally well. Biggest problem I have ever had was letting the battery go dead because I forgot to turn them off.

The pro ears that I am looking at has a automatic shut off after 4 hours if not in use.Kind of handy IMHO.

That is a good feature. It is nice to be able to easily hear commands or a normal conversation yet have any damaging noise blocked out.

I have a pair of relatively cheap Caldwell's that work fine. When on there is a red LED thats lit so it's a reminder to turn them off.

I suggest that anyone who hasn't tried electronic hearing protection not think of them like a pricey spotter or chrony (a 'one does it all'), or another 'range rocket':)D), but rather like scopes that may be switched and tried under different circumstances.

Good digital muffs cost less than good optics, so don't think it's silly to buy/try a few that appeal, are well reviewed, etc. When introducing a new shooter, or at the range with the Mrs it's nice that those at the firing line have the same convenience. ;) tog

I own and like the ProEars. I do use lots of little batteries, though. Mine are old, no auto-off.

For rifle or at indoor ranges I still use ear plugs under the muffs.
