I have a 642B that the ring gear is shot, I've been turning the crank shaft a 1/4 turn before starting and that works but, I'm getting tired of doing that! It has a Mitsubishi engine in it if that makes any difference. Is it a bugger of a job to change it out? I have the tools to do it but, I'm wondering about the frustration level being 75 years old !

You are going to have to split the tractor in half just like doing a clutch job on it. If you have the overhead crane or some other way to support both halves while you roll the rear half back, then not so much of a job. Otherwise it could be a bear. You sure don't want to drop either half of it when doing the work.

Recently my brother in law was reworking an 8N Ford and worked over the starter a couple of times, bought a new one but it still would not turn the engine even though it sounded like it was engaging. Finally he noticed that the ring gear was spinning on the flywheel. Some one had attempted to weld it on to the flywheel but not succeeded. I have never seen one spin on the flywheel like that so it must have been replaced with wrong size by previous owner(s), but I fixed it by putting 4 good welds on it. Since it didn't appear to be cracked and no broken teeth, the welding fixed the issue.
That wont work for you if you have missing teeth though.

Usually you can take the ring gear of and flip it over depending how bad it is. The starter motor gear tends not to engage all the way leaving half a good gear.

But please take no offense. I wish I was contemplating this at 75. I'm only 44 and get frustrated as **** working on these things.

It doesn't really matter what it is. You are still going to need to get the flywheel off so that you can replace the ring gear or flip it as previously mentioned. You might be able to remove the flywheel without removing the engine. It probably won't be what I would call a fun job but with a bit of ingenuity it's possible.

Once you get the flywheel off then set it on a pail and knock the ring gear off with a hammer and a punch. The easiest way that I've found to re install the ring gear is to bake it in the oven at 350 for about a half hour. Pull it out of the oven and immediately set it on the flywheel and it will slide right on. It also helps to have the flywheel cold. Like just out of the freezer. The easiest way to get all this all done with out a lot of hassle is to send the wife shopping for a few hours.

I'm wondering if all the hydraulic stuff has to be unbolted or will the engine just slide out? Could I BE SOOO lucky?
Thanks for all the info guys.
