So I am mulling over purchasing on ebay a "kit" of bolts, I have looked for a good deal on grade 2, but all I am finding are grade 5 and 8

What would be the downside of grade 8 bolts in normal application? I understand the strength difference, but in general applications is there a reason you would want a grade 2 over a grade 8

A shear bolt maybe, altho gr2 is smeary -- not ideal for a shear bolt. Gr8 is very strong -- more than you want for a shear bolt. Gr5 is a good all around bolt. If you have a Tractor Supply in your vicinity youre all set to make your own kit. They sell in bulk. Just buy a few gr5 of every size. Pay by the pound. Get some gr8 washers too!

first I've heard of a grade 8 washer. I buy bags of bolts at menards

They even have A-325 washers.
Actually hardened steel washers for structural steel fall under ASTM F436 whether used for A325 or A490 bolts. I have never heard of a grade 8 washer.

Not lock washers. Grade 8 flat washers. Much stronger to withstand and spread hi bolting loads. Very good for use on u slots and oversized holes, as well as standard fastening setups. Low grade washers are unstable in hi strength fastening. They are crushed.

When it comes to bolts i have to depend on, i only buy them from a respected nut/bolt dealer that DOESN'T sell cheapo or china bolts!!!

I learned my lesson the hard way one Sunday, when i needed some 1/2" grade 8 bolts and bought them from Tractor Supply, because my supplier wasn't open on Sunday! Anyway, I bought 100 of them to hold the blades on my bigger rotavator (tiller) and those POS gave me grief until every one of them was gone off that tiller!!!

I only buy bolts from those places when a cheaper bolt doesn't matter for that job...

Interesting, I havnt broken any. Were they the gold chromate coated or the "blue" ones they used to have? Did you ultimately replace them with American made coarse thread or did you go to fine thread?
