Hey, those soft shell snapper are good eatin'.
Our snapping turtles, down here, are hard shell alligator snapping turtles.

I was thinking that shooting some would keep the gator well fed but then saw OP was in Maine. Do they even have snappers in Maine?
We do have snapper here in Maine.
We had our first turtle the very next day and every day since. We had as many as 4 at a time.
The geese have brought in 5 babies. And now a mallard duck is hanging around the log.
We don't shoot things at the pond and as long as the critters don't bother us we enjoy the view.
I scoop snappers up out of my gully with my backhoe.A snapper will gobble up those baby geese or ducks. I have a huge one here that I had to relocate. It came up on the lawn and I dumped a Rubbermaid storage tub over it to capture it. It was fiesty!
