Well a nice surprise, I went to "Load" my tires because I can lift the back of my tractor up sometimes, and they were already done at the dealer. Guess I need to pick up smaller trees, or get wheel weights, or maybe go get a 3pt carry all and throw a barrel of water on that. I can't imagine what my tractor would be like with just air filled tires.

What do you use on the back as a counter-weight now? A barrel of water will only weigh ~450#. That's probably not enough for a tractor your size.

Some tractor dealers will not install a FEL without also loading the tires; however, mine were not loaded. I recently loaded them and it made a big difference in traction and stability.

or get wheel weights, or maybe go get a 3pt carry all and throw a barrel of water on that.

You need something on the 3 pt commensurate with whatever you are trying to pick up with the FEL. Depending on what you are picking up, as Parkansky said, a barrel of water might not be enough. If you are close to maxing out the loader, 3 barrels of water would be more like it. Without proper rear ballast, besides the annoyance of the rear coming off the ground, that puts a lot of unnecessary stress on the front axle.

I did some maintenance work on a small wild life opening I made a couple years ago by clearing out all the trees. I have to keep the regen cut and the edges cut back.

WildLifeOpening.JPG

There is a little apple tree on the left that has responded really well since being recued from under the woods canopy. I girdled and left a big pine for the woodpeckers or a raptor perch. There are several brush pile around the periphery for rabbits, small mammals, or baby turkey and partridge. And the ground layer has filled in nicely with wild blue berries which birds love. Something for everybody.

I also worked some more on the firewood pile

I have an old 22 ton TSC splitter. A great bang for the buck in my opinion.
I cut my wood about 18". Last year I put an adjustable stop on the return stroke so the wedge stops when I have a 20" opening. It saves me from waiting for 6" of dead travel time on each split stroke. This is where it stops. It makes things move along much faster.

Your pics. look like your very well organized Gordon and that's one nice hefty looking log splitter. I do every thing I can to encourage wild life around here as well. Lots of birds. grouse, California quail, but rabbits don't have a chance to many cyotes, 1 bob cat for sure , big owl and a few big hawks. We have a raven family happening now so they keep the hawks away.

Tilled up an area and went down to the lower field and made some top soil and brought it back to the garden. As I made my 4 trips I grabbed a bucket of rubble each time and filled in a deep hole I am working at filling in.

I dug a hole for a friend. This is approximately 22,000 gallon addition to his already 20,000 gallon Koi pond. He had put the three sides up and I came in and dug it out. Took about 7 hours on the clock. Tractor was running very sluggish. Found out today the brake pedal was not fully releasing. All better now

began clearing out the area next to my garage .

old tree stump cut 3 years ago- only had about 8 inches above ground.
Had to use the rippers on all sides of this one to finally break it loose with the dozer. (one of the harder stumps to loosen so far)
Then picked up the dirt covered roots and dropped it from the grapple a few times. So far Really enjoying having a dozer with rippers and a grapple on the tractor for some of these stumps.

Also put some time on the new Holland skid steer - picked up a free freezer and washer for our son- sometimes the skid steer really is the only one to get things placed in a tight corner of an out building for storage.

I get my firewood from woods road maintenance, stand improvement/thinning, and softwood logging operations as well as stuff that is dead or dying. So I end up with a big variation in size and species. When I block and split the firewood I try to sort it out roughly by heating quality so I can load the wood shed sensibly. The smallest limb wood, popple(aspen), pin cherry, and softwood goes in the Sept/Oct or April/May rows. Bigger limb wood, white birch, and black cherry goes in the Nov or March rows. And I make sure any solid maple, oak, beech, yellow birch, or ash ends up in the Dec, Jan, Feb rows.
It is a long heating season. Nothing worse than having a row of small limb wood to burn in the middle of January when you know there is some nice maple 2 rows in. :)

Not a good day on the homestead yesterday...

WE are still working on the house hoping to get moved, so while I was waiting on drywall mud to dry I decided to run the mower around the front yard. All was going well, then on the second pass I end up with a flat... No big deal, I grabbed the 4060 out of the shed and drug the ZT back to the barn.

Fast forward an hour or so, I again was in between jobs and took the tractor down to the woods to mow our ATV trails. I make it to the farthest point from the barn and get a stick in my rear tire! I had no idea what had happened, I heard a POP, and then was instantly covered in a nasty brown liquid!!! At first I feared Hyd. Line, but then realized the terrible sticky mess was coming from the tire. I jammed the ol girl in high gear and made it to the barn before the tire went flat, I sit here at the desk this morning making calls to find someone who can fix it on site....

Another day in the life!!!

Moved to the second of five wood piles I have scattered around the woods this year. This one is on the ugly side but has some good yellow birch and maple in it.

We may be distantly related. Yesterday I decide to take my new grease gun to the barn and try it out. I saw the hand pump models on sale this winter and had read on here how much people like them...so I go me one. I get in my truck, start to roll the windows down and the passenger window pops very loud and drops about half way down. The cable/gear in the door breaks. I'm like....you got to be kidding me......I just put new batteries on it Saturday. Not going to let it bother me, I go on to the barn, load my new grease gun and start to work.......I pump about 1/2 a tube and it stops working. I take it apart about 3 times, pump it, change tubes, etc...can't get it to work to save my life. I have grease gun that is prob 10 years old and it has never let me down. Today I drive a rip of a little car I keep for running around. It overheats on way home. I guess I will hitch-hike to work in the morning. Last week I bought a pull behind spreader at Sears, put it together after work one night only to figure out the cable that operates the little door on bottom of the hopper is broken. I feel your pain. Keep calm and hang in there!

Wow nice project. I love fish keeping but haven't ventured in a pond... yet! But it is in the plans.

a little seat time, but mostly hard work redoing the front walkway to my home. My teenage assistant yesterday no showed so I wound up pulling all the pavers out myself, not that hard actually. And today I had help from two local firemen, big boys... who got most of the install done, and will finish tomorrow. Used the optional underlayment boards that hopefully will keep everything more level. Found two small sinkholes in the walkway. One shovel went down half its length. Not very reassuring...

Looking good Drew. Both are big, but one of your helpers is in better shape than the other. The one fellow looks like a linebacker. And don't forget to tie a rope around your waist when you are probing your sink hole.

I needed my backhoe today for the 1st time since last fall to dig out a blue spruce stump. I dropped the tree last night & hauled it off to the woods. I'm still struggling to learn the nuances of efficiently getting the backhoe on & off!! Stump is gone though!!

Dumb question... wouldn't it be easier to use the backhoe to drop the whole tree? If you dig the backside of the root ball and use the weight of the tree as well as the height then the backhoe will push it right over, then you are cutting it in a safer environment? Just asking?
