walk behind or 3pt brush mower

Good evening,

I am in the market for a brush cutter but can't decide if I want to go with a walk behind like the DR or one that can attach to my Branson 2400H. I am torn because I have some open acreage that would benefit from the 3pt mower but I have some tight and steep woods where a walk behind would work better, also along our driveway ditch area. I like the price point of the 3pt over walk behind better. Upside to walk behind is I wouldn't have to hook up or disconnect the 3pt every time I wanted to use it or switch back to my rake. Downside would be the much longer time to do the open field area which would be about 1.5 acres. To throw another wrench in I also need to look at getting a riding mower or something for about 1.5 acres of "lawn" too. Trying to figure out what to get first and how to spend the money most wisely. I can hold off on the rider for now, just planted the seed so I won't be mowing that anytime soon. But the open field area is starting to get really tall and needs to be manicured a bit.

Sorry for the long post, just thinking out loud trying to decide what I want to do.

For the price of a walk-behind you could get a 3pt rough mower, a basic rider mower, a string trimmer and a basic push mower. That is a better combination for what you're doing.

Yeah kind of the route I am thinking. I do already have a stihl brush cutter so I could use that on the hilly and ditch stuff.

I've got a 4' bush hog that I pull behind my Kubota B7100hst (4wd 17hp subcompact) and clear 1.5ac open field about three times a year with them, as well as clear around a neighbors pond/wooded hillside once or twice a year.

In my humble opinion, there couldn't be anything better for the task. It's large enough to make short work of the open area, but small enough that it clears nicely between most of the trees, not to mention big/strong enough to clear very overgrown areas that I couldn't imagine a walk behind even making a dent in. Besides the fact you get to sit down instead of stand/walk/fight it

I have the billy goat walk behind brush cutter 11 hp honda motor self propelled 3 forward speeds 1 reverse speed.There are very nice in tight spots but WHIP your butt after about 1-2 hours of cutting.I also have a 3pt brush hog and prefer that much better.

I went the route of a pull behind Swisher Trail Cutter. I hook it up to my UTV. Not a cheap alternative but a bit more versatile than a 3pt mower. I still have areas where a walk behind would be nice.

I have a DR field and brush mower and love it, but would not want to regularly cut a 1-1/2 acre field with it. The cutting width is just too narrow when you are used to finish mowing with a 60" mower. I use the DR to maintain our trails and steep hillsides where manuverability of the tractor is limited.

For a walk behind you might also want to consider an old Gravely with a 30" brush deck up front. You can pick one up for anywhere between $300 - $1500, depending on age, condition, etc.

I would get a heavy duty 4 foot bush hog. I have done so much improvement with my 4 foot Hardee Bush Hog. Good luck.
