YM2000 200 PSI Compression No. 1 Piston

I am trying to get a YM2000 running. It puffs white smoke. My local diesel shop did a compression test and reported the first piston as 200 PSI and the second as 400 PSI. I previously had them rebuild the injectors for me. The first injector showed no signs of having fired while the second clearly had carbon from firing. What should I do next? I would like to get the tractor running fairly inexpensively to see how useful it is. Eventually I would like to rebuild the engine. Does it make sense to only rebuild the first piston? If the rings are bad may I drop the oil pan, pull the rod bearing, pull the piston, clean it, check the piston and cylinder for damage, if none then put new rings on the piston, carefully replace the rod bearings the same way they came out, and have a repair that could last a few years?

A second thought. Has any one ever tried to upgrade a 2 cylinder Yanmar 2000 to a three cylinder engine?

The YM2001,2002,2010,2020 are 3 Cyl. 24Hp.

It might be cheaper to buy a different tractor than to upgrade the engine. Besides, I have heard that the 3 cylinder engines do not have as much low end torque as the 2 cylinder ones. They are supposedly quieter though.

Three cylinder is definitely way quieter than the two!!

Another bit of information. When I bought the tractor the ground around it was littered with empty starter fluid cans. However the price I paid was so low that any work I put into the engine to make it run will still make it a good deal.

You would spend $3000 turning your $3000 tractor into a $3000 tractor.

Hopefully not like the other guy on here recently that needed a new oil pan as it blew it off useing starting fluid.
