ZD21 drive wheel lockup

The left drive wheel locks up when I move the control level from the forward position back to the neutral position. It has just started this. It seems to act as if the lever has been pulled past the neutral position into the reverse position and the tire is trying to instantly change rotation direction. But, the lever is not going past the neutral position. If I move the lever slowly back to the neutral position I can keep the wheel from lockup. There is no unusual noise or operation and I can drive the wheel in reverse without issue. The right drive wheel has no operational issues.

Anyone have a thought as to the cause? Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

i have a 2001 ZD21 60" with 950 hrs. Last 2 yrs, I have had the brake problems that had to be dealt with at the start of mowing season. On one side or the other, one brake would bind and not go as fast as the other side. apparently rust would set in during the winter storage. This year I replaced the brakes and it is working perfectly this season. It could be a brake issue. Love that ZD21!

Thanks for your response. I have already confirmed it is not the brakes causing it to lock up.
