Need 10 stumps took out pretty quick, mostly pine largest being 13" diameter. Thinking of renting a stump grinder this week, anyone had good luck doing this verses hiring it out, which I really dont want to do.

Depends on what type of rental your referring to. Some places rent out those small stumpgrinders that you push around like an oversized walk behind mower, and some rent out legit commercial machines.

If your talking about the larger commercial machines then they would make quick work out of those stumps. If your referring to the smaller homeowner ones I wouldn't even waste your time.

The larger (worthwhile) machine might cost about the same as hiring it out, so you may not save much money, but at least you'd be doing the work yourself like you want.

I grind stumps as part of my business, and it's typically less money for me to do the work for the customer vs them rent and do it themselves.

I just did 2 jobs, one grinding and one chipping, and it turned out to cost the homeowners the same amount of money if they had rented the equipment and done it themselves.
(And that's using average wages, not working for pennies)

If you can find a good rental, go for it! It's very satisfying to demolish a stump into nothingness :)

Around here the going price for stump removal(grinded) is $75 per stump. My dad and I rented a midsized machine on friday and grinded 34 stumps over the weekend. cost us $275.

Well guess its HAVE it done vs me doing it, rental place was $150 for 4 hours ouch, and a guy with a massive heavy duty commercial looking machine want $90 to wipe them out.

I dig around the stump with a shovel, down below the grade of the surrounding ground. Then I wash the dirt of the stump and chainsaw it off below grade. It's then easy to cover with dirt or a piece of sod...

Is that $90 each stump or for all 10. For all 10 that would be a bargain.

I just had 3 stumps ground out, cost me $80. Two were about 24 inches in diameter, one was about 8 inches in diameter. I cleaned up the mess. The stump grinders and tree trimmers hit me up 3 or 4 times during the summer, and it depends on how hungry they are, if they have the grinder with them, and how bad they want a job. The tree trimmers range anywhere from a professional lift truck, to a 76 Oldsmobile with a ladder and a chain saw...and the prices vary accordingly. Choose your men wisely; I checked the DOC files on the last tree trimmer I hired and he had a rap sheet a mile long. My first clue was when he wanted some "gas money" at noon the first day. He took down 2 large pine trees (see stump grinders above) and trimmed a couple others.

In 07 I rented a stump grinder from town and had over 20 stumps to grind,I started when they opened and that night I returned it cost me about 150 I think.
