Would you buy this truck?

Friend of mine is looking for a truck for his son and asked me about this one. It's a 2004 Tacoma 4wd and has only 35k miles! The catch is it's a 2 owner and was involved in a wreck back in 2005 according to the AutoCheck. Now, the good thing is this truck appears to have lived its whole live in VA(not much snow) and I know CarMax won't buy trucks with rusted out frames and such. My only wonder is did they use factory Toyota parts when they repaired the truck from the accident and why only 35k with 2 owners? Maybe an older man had it and died and his wife kept it but didn't drive it much, who knows. Price is a little high, but again, it's not everyday you find an '04 with 35k miles on it. I told him to at least have it transferred to the local CarMax place since its free and go check it out. If nothing else he can buy an extended warranty from them for $1000 that will cover him for a few years and a good many miles.

$18,000.00 for an 11-year-old Toyota pickup truck? Especially one that has been wrecked?

I don't care if it only has 35,000 miles. A lot of things go bad from age and sitting.

As for the extended warranty for an additional $1,000.00, well, $19,000.00 is not that far from the cost of a new Toyota pickup, maybe without a lot of options, but still, a NEW one, not an 11-year-old one.

And if the purchase is to be made with borrowed money, then there is the differential in interest rates between financing a new vehicle vs. an 11-year-old vehicle.

Not the sort of deal I would ever make, that's for sure.

Buy a new one. 18K is too much, regardless of condition. A lot of the same things are still going to go wrong.

I think he's going to pay cash, no financing. I haven't priced new Tacoma's in awhile but I would guess for a new one similar to this would be around 27-28.

Geez, just use Google, lot's will pop up much cheaper, albeit with more miles.

Probably. But it would be a better expenditure of money. It would last the kid for a least a decade, maybe a lot more, whereas in a few years the 11-year-old one will need to be replaced.

And does the kid NEED one like that? Or does he need reliable transportation?

Yes, it isn't 4wd, and no it does not have a "big" engine. or "alloy" wheels. It probably DOES have as many electronic thingies as the 2004 has.

It WILL have A/C, which I did not have until my 5th truck.

what does KBB list this truck being worth ? You have to list options and such to get real worth..

A lot of used vehicles of any age have been involved in an accident... Some new from the factory have been wrecked and repaired B-4 putting them on the lot for sale

Auto check /carfax don't always know if a vehicle was wrecked or not
