decided to join due to the ford 3000 i currently own. Constantly looking for answers and surfing the different web sites is too time consuming. Hopefully by joining this site i will only have to come here to find answers. Currently trying to find out how to test my charging system due to battery not staying charged.

HI. Welcome.

You can test the alternator with a multi-meter for voltage output and an amp meter rated for the max amp output of your alternator. The output should be marked on the alternator. A load tester can tell you if the battery is bad. If you do not want to buy one most auto parts stores or Walmart will test them for free.

To TBN dymista. A lot of the time when a battery is not charging it is the cables. Don't forget to check all the cables and their connections.

does your machine still have the oem lucas generator and external voltage regulator?

or has it been swapped out to an alternator.

So.. battery goes dead setting?

have you tried pulling a bat cable after use to see if it still goes dead? if it does. battery is bad.

if it does not go dead setting with cable off, you have a draw.

hookup neg cable,t hen use a test lamp and put it inline with + cable. it should light if there is a draw. if it does light, start checking for a draw. usual cases are miswired 3 wire alternator or 1 wire alt with bad diodes. etc..

post back and I can help you troubleshoot your generator and regulator or alternator charge system.
