Looking to purchase a 5' tiller, but would like the ability to run forward or reverse rotation. Other than the Tarter, who makes one that can be flipped"

I always thought they were one or the other. Didn't think they would "switch".

I saw one a few years ago, don't remember the brand - I downloaded the manual for it, and when I read about switching it I trashed the whole thing including the manual. Sounded to me like it would take the better part of a DAY to do the switch

I ended up buying a 6' Priefert, 6 tines per carrier, forward rotation - the tractor I use it with has a dual range transmission, bottom gear runs 0.7 mph at PTO speed. Couldn't ask for finer tilth.

My other tractor's lowest gear runs at 1.6 mph - at that speed, I have to make 4 passes instead of 2 and it still doesn't come out quite as well... Steve

The tarter switches with 12 bolts.

That sounds a lot easier than the description I remember - got a link?

In all the years I've been doing custom tilling, I've never had a time that I thought I needed to have reverse tilling!

Buy a GOOD tiller in the first place and you won't need it reversible.

I can see, if ya have a few extra bucks to spend, getting a reverse tine tiller. I cannot see wanting one that is reversible. I wonder how many people who have them end up setting them and leaving them, never switching again after a time or two...

Kuhn or Howard HR series... is a good start... IF you think all tillers are created equal, then you don't know much about tillers.

Kuhn is more than I need. Looked at a Howard 300B-U (old HR7), discouraged that it was ~200 lbs lighter than the tarter. Listed at 436lbs for a 60".

Kuhn is a GOOD design, the HR7 is a light duty home owner tiller.

That's the thing about Howards, you can get anything from home owner to real HD tillers in several widths, that way you can get a GOOD tiller in the width you want, as long as you have a tractor that will run it.

Weight is good, but the QUALITY of materials used to build, is more important, I have an HR8 and it's a very good tiller... I also have two bigger Howards too...

Personally, I buy quality over price every time...

Looks like Howard got rid of their mid levels. They go from the 300 series (HR7) to the 400 series (HR14). Can't drive a 60" 400. I'm only 30 at the pto, and it's rated at 40.

That's why I mentioned that if you want a HD (read good) tiller, look HARD at a Kuhn... They still have a good product...
