An old Army buddy sent me a e-mail last night and I know there is some experts on here that might be able to help him go in the right direction.

Here is what he sent me: I need your help find some rifle powder if you can in
your area if you find it will figure how to get to me later

The brand I need is (HODGDON)-Varget come in 1 pound
& 8 pound : Learning how to reloading my own soon:

Have a good day

After getting his mail I called him up and he said he said he looked up sites and everybody was out of what he wants. I told him maybe some of you would know where he can get his hands on some or what he could use as a replacement.

While everyone is searching .... How about some CCI 38 special shotshell plastic capsules? :)

I'd probably find a different power and use it. There are usually several different powders that will give the same results.

I was at our local gun shop yesterday;his powder orders have been back ordered for months.
As suggested try to widen your search by seeing if there are "other" powders that will work for your load.
The only thing that kept me reloading was a friend that had a big stock pile of components.

Ditto - if he doesn't have a good reloading manual, get one. I actually have a whole stack of Lyman Reloading Handbooks that I keep around for when my friends ask me about reloading (I do quite a bit of it for myself, none for others). I hand them the book and tell them after reading it if they still have questions let me know and I will tell them what page number in the book I gave them the answer is on.

Having no idea what round your buddy is using Varget in can't suggest any alternatives other than the stuff Varget works well in - ( 308 Winchester family and similar) there are many, many other powders that work as good or better with plenty of load data.

Personally for the .308 Winchester I have always used Hodgdon BLC2. It was economical and I never was able to make Varget shoot better with all else equal so I stuck with it.

Probably every powder mfg has reloading data online.

Here is Hodgdon:

https://www.hodgdon.com/

He can select his cartridge and bullet weight, then check all the powders to compare.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but.....its really hard now days to find any powder for anything from any manufacturer. Been relaoding for years now and seen powders go in the past 6 years or so go so fast when they come in that it does not have time to sit a second on the shelf. I use Alliant powders, blue dot, red dot, 2000mr, reloader 15,...Accurate arms...2015, 2520...and so on. One place I have seen that does have powder, is Powder Valley. They have been pretty consistent on pricing also. American reloading is another site thats pretty decent also. Good luck, and If I can help....let me know....also, It all depends on what you are reloading to what you may find out there. Good luck in the hunt....Jim
