Need the phone to ring in the house and in the new shop, know i can tap on to the gray phone box on the side of the house, 300' total length. Havent researched it yet but questions come to mind, 1. any special wire to use 2. will it work normally 3. any direct burial cable available or use conduit?

This should help, Mate... and it's a US site. As long as the wire/cable is "Cat 5" it'll be your decision as to burial or conduit.

There's a handy little device/tool to 'push' the wire in to connect that can be bought at Radio Shack (or whatever it's called these days. Don't worry, you won't break anything.

Your phones would just need to be connected in "Parallel". Yes it will work normally.
You can get Direct Burial phone cable. All you need is one pair of wires. Cable comes in 2 pairs and up.

For telephone, cat5 is really not necessary, but probably the easiest to find in small pair counts. If it were me, I'd install an underground pipe (for mechanical protection) - black well pipe is adequate, and then use duct-rated cat5. Really - duct rated, NOT riser, as your pipe will eventually fill with water. I'd pull two cables at least, as you can very likely run Ethernet on the other cable. Yes, it exceeds specified distance, but it will often work. Even if you don't use Ethernet now, there's a good chance that you will in the future.

Kenneth, I'm retired from the phone company. Make sure you hook into you phone line on the customer (your) side of the Outside Network Interface (ONI). You can use direct burial 2 pair, but I recommend Cat 5e as the price is the same and it will give you some flexibility in the coming years as changes are implemented in how AT&T delivers phone service. Use flooded or as its called gel-filled cable- shielding is unnecessary. Also put your Cat 5e in PVC conduit- it's cheap.

Run direct burial cat5e you don't need to put whole thing in conduit. Just where it goes up into the hose and out about 6'. Then you should be able to plow it it. I Welded chunk of flat bar onto the bottom of the bucket of the skid loader went backwards moving up and down. Then push cable in. Doesn't have to be that deep. Didn't put it in conduit right near the building cut it, and had to replace it. Never cut it in the middle of no where. Even if the phone company puts it in they don't go that deep.

Thanks for the replies, this will be a project i tackle in the coming weeks. Instead of getting with the phone company and having them run from the box on the street I just assumed it would be better for me to do it this was, might be wrong though.

Then again...costco sells real cheap wireless phones that reach 300 plus feet. Mine reaches nearly 500 feet. And nothing to bury

Keep in mind when you bury copper wire in the ground, you now have exposed your system to lightning strikes. Be sure to put good lightning protection on both the equipment end and the instrument end. Transtector/Polyphasor is the best, but ITW Linx will get you by. Of course lightning is far worse in some areas of the country than others. Many people do not realize for every lightning bolt you see in the sky, there is an earth current in the ground coming from all directions to equalize that bolt of energy.

I buried our cable years ago before they had good wireless, has come a long way and chances are would not do it again. Direct buried cable not cheap. For point to point look at this, can go miles if needed. https://www.ubnt.com/products/ then there is the cost effective wireless phone.
