Who can afford a new truck anymore?

I have a 96 F150 that is super clean... only used by a retired guy to go fishing and bought it as a retirement gift to himself... 5spd, long bed super cab and 4wd.. and 120k original miles... put it on Craigslist for $4500 and silence.

This week my brother in Arizona sold his '96 Chevy extended cab 4x4 with about 165K on it for $3500.
I was thinking about buying it and having it shipped here,($1600) and still had less tied up in it than the rusted out junk they sell here.

Is it 4WD? The manual transmission may scare some off. I have always been a manual guy and am fearing of buying a new truck and be limited in choice.

Bing Bing Bing. The manual tranny is scarring off buyers. Last time I looked/read, Dodge was the only large pickup maker with a manual transmission. :(

I was at a stop light last week and there was a small car besides me that kept rolling back and moving forward. Yep, it was a manual tranny. Driven by a woman too. Not many people can drive a manual tranny, even fewer woman can. :(

Did get a response from 200 miles away in the mountains.... guy said he is looking for a snowplow truck...

Also, my typo in the ad was just mentioned... super car instead of super cab

It's the opposite here in Aus... (yeah, I know, everything's opposite down here).

A manual trannie is standard and automatic is extra. That's beginning to change as demand changes but the norm is still manual. Even so, the expense of a new ute is astronomical, yet the adverts proclaim that you're getting a bargain.

Oh, and the majority of the bigger utes are diesel, petrol motors are the 'extra cost' around here.

Who can afford a new truck? Short answer, I can afford one but no way am I going to pay for a new truck. Bought my 2wd reg. cab long bed with 15k on the odometer @ 3 years old for $9400 back in 05 and still driving it. I've put 115,000 miles on it and see no reason to replace it. Just replacde the factory plug wires and fixed an exhaust leak and it's running great.
My money goes towards retirement. That said, I own Ford stock and the dividend is almost 4%.

Manual transmissions are cheaper here, well they were last time I looked, and automatics were much more expensive. However, the automatics are getting MPG as good as, if not better, than manuals because they automatics have more gears.

I think one reason US trucks are so much more expensive now is that so many people want diesel engines and the engines really add to the cost of the truck. The diesel engine in my first diesel truck was a $2,600 add on. My second truck, the diesel was $4,500ish. A new engine is $8,500! Out of curiosity I was looking at the Jeep model with a diesel engine. At the time, to get the diesel you had to buy a certain model with very specific packages, that drove the price up around $50-60K for A JEEP! I don't want a Mercedes but I could get one for the same price.

For grins and giggles, well more of a shock, I just priced out a truck just like my 2002 F350. The new truck is $61,000!:shocked::shocked: That price was NOT the top of the line packages nor was the truck loaded.:eek::eek:

And if you've got the 7.3 you've got one that should run a LONG time.
One of the difficulties many of us face as consumers is the inability to charge the cost off on our taxes or as a business expense. The average business owner can charge his customers to pay for his truck and write it off on taxes, I imagine many farmers etc. here can write them off on their taxes. That effectively reduces the cost of the truck by twenty to thirty per cent.
