Many moons ago we had Mortar practice in the Army. One particular one was small, about 2+ feet long and a couple inches in diameter. We would jam the base in the ground and someone would drop a round in it, and poof it would go. I really entertained the thought of putting the base on my thigh for accuracy but I whussed out. John Wayne would have, but not me. Now I am really glad I didn't.
The Japanese had a knee mortar that was quite small, light, and effective. It was supposed to be used with the bottom plate on the ground but some Allied service men assumed that plate was there to support the weapon when fired from the thigh. If fired when supported by the thigh you got a big bruise if lucky, a broken thigh bone otherwise.
