These gas nuts (2 main types) are easy to replace so no need to think it 'ruins the aesthetic' of your M1. Switch to an adjustable for hot ammo, put back the original for milsurp.

Speaking of milsurp, why not buy some ammo when you buy your Garand? CMP sells that, too. Source changes from time to time, the Hornady is terribly expensive, the Greek surplus reasonable.

You need to belong to an affiliated organization to buy from the CMP, so I joined the Garand Collectors Association. Useful group to belong to: Garand Collectors Association

from a collector point of view.. replacing parts reduces collector value. Period.

for a shooter only? it's the best choice to make it ammo agile.

Its a screw, nothing gets permanently altered. Unscrew original gas plug and put in a safe place, screw adjustable one back in its place. It's not that big a deal.

I have both the M1 and the M14. The M1 is a sweet shooting rifle, and I enjoy it a lot, especially since I have lots of ammo for it, BUT I really prefer to shoot the M14.

Even though they are basically the same firearm, (flame suit on), the M14 just seems to recoil a bit less and seems a lot more accurate to me.

My M1 is an older CMP service grade 1943 Springfield and is in like new shape. I like to think my Dad carried it across Normandy beach. He probably didn't but it makes me think of him.

The M14 is a new, fresh out of the box Springfield.

Right out of the box, with no sight adjustment, it was dead on. The .308 round seems to hit harder than the .30-06.

It just seems balanced better than the M1.

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I carried one for 4 years, shot Expert with it, slept with it and got to know it like no other rifle.

This is my rifle, this is my gun...................

For a collector shooting the firearm reduces the value.

If'n you're going to shoot it anyway, then putting in an adjustable gas plug and then when finished shooting putting in the original plug... how can that reduce value?

You answered your own question... Shooting it!

I am a big fan of the M1 Carbine. I recall quite a few stories with it in my family and circle of friends. One sky soldier (RIP) would always hassle me on my choice of weapons, turned out he was shot by the VC with one on a night patrol. Now just thinking of my reaction when he told me that just makes me laugh.
We had good times shooting with that weapon. Better times shared.

The adjustable gas plug is a must have in my opinion as parts (op-rods) are getting more expensive all the time. I would call it cheap insurance.
The M1 needs a lot of cleaning. The piston end of the op-rod is often neglected. Getting the carbon off this area is a good idea especially if the firearm will sit for long periods. The adjustable gas plug is a lot of fun to tune in as it has no affect on accuracy. Just the bolt will not reload another round. So target practice is unaffected and no wasted rounds.
Don't even think about reloaded ammo. :2cents: Notice that a chambered unfired round has a small mark on it. because of the free floating firing pin.
Enough about safety the M1 is a lot of fun. :)

Wish I had one.. I have played with them, owned by others, but I have never owned one. But I really liked the M14 a bit more, or at least the Springfield armory modern version called the M1A. I have never shot an original.

I would have gladly given you all 11 pounds of mine in 1959. Brown Eisenhower boots too.
