The Carbine was well-regarded for jungle warfare. It lost lustre in Korea due to uncertain cycling in cold temps and longer range engagements. The government did not have the same scale of arsenal rebuild for the Caebine, either.

It has over 900 ft lbs of energy, not trifling. I thought Garand pprices were getting up there but Carbine prices are through the roof.

The adjustable gas plug is a must have in my opinion as parts (op-rods) are getting more expensive all the time. I would call it cheap insurance.
The M1 needs a lot of cleaning. The piston end of the op-rod is often neglected. Getting the carbon off this area is a good idea especially if the firearm will sit for long periods. The adjustable gas plug is a lot of fun to tune in as it has no affect on accuracy. Just the bolt will not reload another round. So target practice is unaffected and no wasted rounds.
Don't even think about reloaded ammo. :2cents: Notice that a chambered unfired round has a small mark on it. because of the free floating firing pin.
Enough about safety the M1 is a lot of fun. :)

Curious why you few reloaded ammo?

Sounds lil someone with no knowledge or experience with reloading talking.

Many manuals list 30-06 Springfield, the in a separate listing have 30-06 for garands so you can reload to m2 ball specs, even getting darn close on original powder.

One good point for the car in is it is not ammo picky, and you can drop the mag with a fish still in the tube and slap a fresh mag in.. Kinda impossible to do on a garrand. Enemy need only wait for the dinnerbell when your enbloc clings out empty..

An m1 with a less picky apatite and a removable mag would be the ticket.. Oh wait, the m14/ m1a got that position :)

Pilgrim, that is a very neat picture you posted.. And yes, compared to the garand, the carbine is "wimpy"... but put it this way, I sure would not want to be in the way of one of its 110 grain bullets traveling nearly 2000 feet per second...Over 900 ft/lbs of energy... yeah, that would hurt. Many a deer has found that out the hard way. With softpoint bullets of course, but as pointed out its specs are superior to the .357 magnum even out of an 8 inch barrel.

I've heard the stories about the 'inadequacies' of the .30carbine round, and how they don't stop enemy soldiers. I've always called BS.

The .30 carbine round has almost identical ballistic specs as a .357 magnum and very few people have ever run away from them after getting shot. Remember, they're the round that will 'go right thru an engine block'..not that that is actually true but is part of the lore surrounding the power of the .357. If they didn't work, the govt wouldn't have made more of them in a shorter time than any other military rifle...ever. They were made during WW2 and were still in use right thru Vietnam. I had one when I didn't have the Garand. Some may still be in use.

No one would argue that the .30-06 is not better than a .30 carbine as a stopper, but it is arguable that the .30carbine is a wimpy round.

I would hazard a guess the stories originated from long range shots. I would suspect the carbine was lacking beyond two hundred yards. No doubt based on ballistics the 06 round will out perform the carbines round. The carbine was designed for close quarters work. Handy in a jungle but not so much at 500 yards and beyond.

Here's a nice article on the carbine Vs the garand. Pretty interesting read.
Putting the M1 Carbine in the Right Context | Shooters' Journal

There is a moral to that article that we often forget...that being comparing apples to oranges. The two weapons were designed for a different purpose, and to that extent they both perform superbly. It's like asking "What was the best fighter plane from WWII"? It depends on what role you expect the plane to perform and what it was designed for.

my father shot his way thru France with an M1 and said that the empty clip 'ping' rumor was just crap. No one ever thought about it. He said there was so much noise everywhere the ping was never a consideration.

Is this old wive's tale still going around?

To the first point Carbine is notoriously difficult to reload and while all the ammo (even during WWII) was non-corrosive most of what is available is the standard FMJ. Carbine ammo has been particularly difficult to get the last few years, though I did get a batch from CMP last year.

The odds that an entire squad would go empty at the same time are virtually nil. There is not much time between when an ejected clip hits the ground and the rifle is back in battery, so any action is equally unlikely.

A few years ago I worked the pits at a GC Garand match. This allowed me to be down range while roughly a squad worth of Garands fired 20 rounds each per section. The rules are set to require clip ejects and insertion. The muzzle reports of a dozen Garands is all I heard. Which was awesome....
