On some brands, the drum floats. On the bobcat version I rented, they do not and the wheels are adjusted by a turn buckle. I was thinking, what good are these wheels other than lifting if you approach an incline, even then I assume they lift the drum prematurely. I am looking at a used power rake without the wheels. Do I really need them. Hook up would be better, keeping it in position for hookup. If you used the side blinders/ deflectors, it would protect them. Other than that, I cant see where I would want the wheels. I can see where a rental should have them since many are inexperienced on a skidsteer

The same reason a road grader is so long. The wheels average out & helps minimize the movement when various parts of the machine or attachment go up & down.

would that not only be on the down, not the up? In other words, if the front of the machine rises just a little, the drum still comes up, tires on front or not. Unless it is floating. Not sure the bobcat attachment has this feature. But then the opposite should be for the down movement. If the machine tips slightly down, the wheels keep it from diving in a magnified amount. I have not used one much, so I am asking if I am seeing this correctly

if the skid steer / bobcat has a "float function" for the arms. the gauge wheels. will allow weight of unit to stay on ground, and allow the arms to go up and down freely. keeping the unit on the ground, regardless of how the skid steer is currently positioned (going up or down a hill or over a bump)
