Another solution may be a cultivator tractor and a conventional utility tractor for the heavy work.

i have never owned or operated a tractor - total newbie, which is why I came here as I knew from talking to friends who DO own tractors that this is a good place for information. I am taking this slow, doing a lot of research.

Two tractors is not reasonable for the OP, who has never operated a tractor and has a limited budget. OP needs money for implements after he buys the tractor.

First, a Utility tractor is more like 50HP+. The BX is a Sub Compact Utility Tractor, and from about 25HP up to 45 or so is a Compact Utility Tractor.

Second, for any ground engaging work on a consistent basis you need at least 35HP. A BX or B just aren't going to cut it.

Start looking at more HP, and expand your search to all brands.

can't agree more. like so many things, really look at your needs, & the choices will follow.

Nothing below 35 HP will run ground engaging equipment consistently? If that is true, that means you are eliminating the L2501 and L3301 too.

Yes, at least the 2501, the 3301 is in the 35HP class, but still a little small.

To all you people out there consistently running ground engagement equipment with 34 HP or less.....STOP!!!!! You shouldn't be doing it! Dang it! Now I have to sell my tractor I used to be perfectly happy with.

Just kidding.......to a degree.

My point is, if the OP wants to do small scale farming, even on 7 acres, 25HP isn't going to handle that comfortably. Turning over a garden a couple times a year is completely different, easily within the capabilities of a small CUT.

Good point, often overlooked. One tractor with lot's of attachments is often better than two tractors with no attachments.

25HP is probably about the minimal. A 4' tiller, or a small 1 bottom plow and some discs, and you've got the soil turned. More HP will just help you do it quicker with bigger implements. People used to do it with a stick, then 1 mule and a plow. A great deal depends on how much time versus money the OP wants to put into the project.

And another thing is timing of purchase.

IF the OP can buy used (and maintain it) autumn usually shows lower tractor prices.

Coincidentally
dont want to spend more than $15,000
was one of the criteria SWMBO and I put down before I bought:

for ~$12K. Which left $3K for attachments :)

I agree ^^^^

There is a big difference between getting by with a small tractor at home and farming for profit. The time to spend to get the result you need is a precious commodity and is often over looked. When grading and leveling a small two acre plot I often find it takes too long with a 60 hp tractor. Trying to do this with a 25 or 30 hp tractor would be cost prohibitive as my daily operating costs would be too high for the amount of work done in a days time.

If you are retired on a hobby farm you can spend the time to use a small tractor. If you need to operate at a profit that is a different deal.
