Well, I'm the OP and we put the melamine on the workbench yesterday. It looks great and will do for the light duty I'll subject it to. When it's beat up enough, I'll use the old top as a pattern for the new and be back in business. It's only lightly stuck down with spray adhesive and I think it will come up pretty easy. I'll bet it will last 5 or more years. Here are the pics.

I can really pile up the stuff on this bench

Looking good!

What became of the old truck you shortened the frame on? Did I miss the end of the project?

Here it is and project still in progress. I need to find someone to weld shut the mounting holes for the dually fenders. I think that will be me so maybe in late summer or early fall that will happen. Then paint, fenders, etc .

I have rolling work tables that get used more than the workbench. The workbench has become a "holding area" for things coming, going or in progress and I think I like it that way.

Dave...10,000 original miles. I couldn't believe it. Grain truck for harvest once a year and then back in the barn.

Too late for this round, but years and years ago, so long I can't remember, but at least 20, I found some coated Masonite at the home store and used that for a bench top. It covered yellow pine 2x4s laid edge to edge held together with all thread. Just used a few finishing nails to keep it from moving around, thinking I'd be replacing it every few years. Well after all this time and many, many hard projects, it's still going strong. The white coating makes it easy to find small items, the coating keeps paint and oil from soaking in, and I can hammer away all day without leaving dents in the top. It's also easy to drive temporary nails or screws through it, something that's come in handy more than once.

Holy mackerel, Sixdogs, with a bench that long you could start a new project everyday and still have room left for another one at the end of the week!

It's the leftover temporary bracing from the barn build. Rather than have it lay around forever and then get tossed out, I built a 24 ft bench. All I had to buy was the 3/4" plywood. Paint is leftover Ford Red. All of us have leftover lumber that could be put to better use rather than leave for some future project we will never do. Now I have a spot to load and unload or to sort or whatever. You're right, the melamine will last a long time and yet is dirt cheap.

I've got to get working on my bench too (moved recently) I like the idea of work tables on wheels, even though they will be shoved up against the wall most of the time. Makes it easier to clean underneath too.
