How Much Extra $$$ To Go With Local Dealer?

I tried local when I bought my Kioti DK50. I knew the owner and met with him face-to-face. My wife and I really wanted to buy this tractor from him. We said - What is your absolute best deal? He gave us the numbers. A few days later, driving by a dealership 50 miles from home, we popped in to compare. They priced their tractor about $100 cheaper but beat the other interest rate by more than a point. We signed the papers on the spot.

When my local dealer called to see if we were going to buy, I told him about the competitors deal. He said - I could have matched that.

Well, too bad.

I have had a few dealers tell me after the fact that they could have matched that price. Well its a bit too late now and maybe you should have given me that price from the get go and you could have had my business! I wonder what part of "Best price " they didn't understand!

I'm in the same boat with my Kubota dealer currently. He was quoting me full retail for a BX25 and said that Kubota sets their prices and that's all he can do. We try to make up for it with service he says.

Called a dealer about and 1-1.5 hrs south and get a price about $1400 less and the salesman is very nice and keeps thanking me for the opportunity to get my business. Called the local dealer and told him the other price and asked if there was anything he could do and flat out says NO! Says straight up, we're not the cheapest game in town. So you're telling me that all those machines sitting on the lot are at a set price and they all sell for retail?! Guess I know where I won't be buying from.

That assumes a whole lot of things which may not be true. One dealer may simply have a much higher overhead cost than the other. If the dealers aren't in the same state there can be a host of differences that influence cost. Even two dealers that are both "full service" don't necessarily pay the exact same price for machines due to volume, etc. Lastly, shipping costs can vary a few hundred dollars between dealers that are 2.5hrs away from each other....that gets passed along to the customer as well.

Personally, I think $1000 is too much to pay for the convenience of a local dealer, but I'm not making a living with my machines.

All good points. My thoughts are that if they are both full service dealers, their overhead should at least be in the same ballpark. Sure one might be on some costly real estate, another not. One may have a little higher freight. There are many factors, but it will be maybe a few hundred a tractor max difference, not thousands.

From a dealers perspective, this is tough. There is the price you want, and then the price you will reluctantly take, then the price you might match if you must to keep a customer local. But if you sold every tractor for the "match" price your margins would not be adequate to keep the doors open for long.

From a dealers perspective, we set our prices at our sales price. We have little room to wiggle since we prefer to not waste our time or yours. Years ago we dropped our prices to our real price as we found that folks do not like the "used car sales" experience. Having said that, if a customer is local and says he can beat our price delivered and all else equal, we will ask him for the opportunity to match his best price. If he is a long distant customer and has a dealer nearby to where he lives, we will not price match, we would then suggest that he supports his local dealer.

To go out of town for $100 does not make sense to me. My threshold is higher than that, I would have paid the extra $100 or asked them to match. Just my opinion, we are all different.

This whole thread was interesting to me. From what I have read on here if I was to buy a tractor in another state my local dealer could refuse to do any warrenty work on it which I think would look bad for the brand. If I could save over 500.00 I would give the local dealer a chance to counter offer but only once. Even if could match half way or offer other things to go in on the deal I would give him my business but if he come out and says he won't even try then I say so long. I like to stay local but my money is important to me also

I wish more dealers would have this philosophy!

I think that many dealers/salespeople don't realize how many sales they lose by not starting at a "real" price. When I get one of those prices (many times over the phone and many times in person) I simply just move on. They never hear from me again on that particular item.

Don't waste my time.

And yet some people feel they must negotiate. I saw an ad on craigslist once that said "$4500 firm, but if you must negotiate, then the price is $5200 and we will go back and forth and see how close you can get me down to $4500". That made me chuckle.

Love... might have to adopt that technique!

Before I bought my Kioti tractor I was looking to buy a Kubota grand L4240 from my local kubota dealer.I had recently purchased a Kubota pro 326 diesel ZTR from him for $10,700 & $15,000 Kubota RTV 900. I checked with another kubota dealer on price just north of us on the same grand L he was $2500 cheaper. My local kubota dealer went ballistic told me if I bought my tractor from the other dealer he would not service or warranty it.It was a blessing in disguise I ended up buying a Kioti tractor instead saved about $8,000 for a comparable tractor.Plus I gained a great Kioti dealer(Michigan Iron & Equipment) who worked with me on sales, parts and service.I give them repeat business and have sent quite a few customers there way. That Kubota dealer is not longer in business for a reason.
