Good fences make good neighbors......or at least more tolerable ones. That's what it took to get mine to stop coming over any time he felt like it (we have a gate on the driveway at the road we normally keep closed). He even asked if I was going to put a gate in the fence.....ahahahaaa...."nope" !

Okay I'll be the one. I'm gonna be the fellow that takes the other guys side. LEAVE HIM ALONE. At least he's trying to clean up his property. If you were in my neighborhood were no one cleans anything and there really is fire dangers if the trash isn't dealt with. I've had to deal with people that plant right up to the property line and I consider that inconsiderate. His actions when talked to you WERE inexcusable. I had neighbors that planted Popular trees right on the fence line and I had to deal with the roots destroying my lawn and tons of leaves I had to deal with. The new property owner cut down the trees when I explain my complaint. He said later he was going to put in some averitis bushes and would plant away from the fence line. I'm probably have been the neighbor you just described but way more curtious and tried to be a GOOD neighbor. bjr

I will agree that at lease he is tryign to clean up the place, BUT unless the burn pile has both neighbors stuff in it, a good and courteous neighbor would make sure to stack their burn pile AWAY from the property line and AWAY from their neighbors crops so it ONLY burns the stuff that needs to be burnt.

What if he had caught more of the bean field on fire and roasted a half acre of beans?

If you are a sportsman at least now you know where to put your deer gut / fish head pile.

I get the impression that, reading these tales of 'bad neighbours', I'm living in a time warp... ALL of my neighbours are great and we look out for each other. Heck, all it takes is a wee bit of effort.

As an example; when I first moved in, the lady behind me put me onto a supplier of hay for my horses. Later, I noticed that she was rolling, by hand, a round of hay out to her horses (they only owned a lawn tractor). So I said that that's silly, checked her out on my tractor and told her to use it any time she needs to... she knows where the key, in my house, is. And, yes, my house is unlocked.

As for a burn pile; I just chuck all of my branches & waste wood over the fence... ... Then, a couple of time a year I collect it and add it to their birthday bonfire (to which I'm also invited). :)

I get the impression in these threads that folks are becoming insular, yet I personally don't experience this. It's a bit surreal.

It depends on the people and place. A good thing/bad thing about the US is that we have people from all over country, and sometimes the world, moving to the same place and this sometimes/often causes Culture Clash. It is a big problem in my county as people from up North move south and try to tell the dumb locals, some of who are living on land given to their family by the King, what to do. Many of the new people moved because the place they left was a h....ll hole, because of the way THEY wanted to live, and now they want to make a mess out of a good place. This does not go over well. At all. Our county politics is the nastiest I have ever seen and it is from one group of people. It really is unreal. And it is unreal that people keep voting these idiots into office.

I could repeat some things that we have experienced with our "neighbors" as a result of this Culture Clash but I won't. TBN is public. Lets put it this way, one of our neighbors refuses to call the people that live near them "neighbors" because they are not neighbors in the real meaning of the word. The non neighbors have ticked off EVERYONE in the neighborhood. It is a real shame.

People are more insular as well. I blame air conditioning. When we lived in the city, the only neighbors that really talked to each other were the ones with kids. When a hurricane came through and took out power for a neighborhood next to ours for a week, the streets were filled with people out talking to each other. As soon as power returned, and the AC and TV would run, nobody was out and about anymore.

Having said all of this, I was reading about a small island in the Shetlands islands. There are only 20-30 people left on this island which is very isolated. If the weather is bad the local postal boat cannot make the trip to the bigger islands nor can small planes land. They can be isolated for weeks. They have internet and phone service but power depends on diesel and one windmill. Fresh food comes from off the island as well. While the people on the island do depend on each other, one of them commented that some people on the island would argue about the location of a post. Hmmmm, where have I heard that before.:laughing::laughing:

Later,
Dan
