I have a relative that has a "pig ranch" around Omaha. When we visited he had 6000. His barn was an open pole barn big enough to have a regulation NFL game inside. He had a concrete roadway along where he fed the nasty beasties. Drive his tractor down the roadway and the mixer/feeder spewing food into the 1/2 mile long trough for the pigs. I sat up on the upper rung of the pole fence watching his feeding operation until something spooked the porkers - en masse, they swung around and headed toward the fence where I was sitting. Have you ever seen what 6000 pigs look like as they are coming right at you - full tilt.

I got so confused/frightened I got one leg tangled in the second rung of the pole fence and almost broke it as I hustled down off.

He invited me inside to help him clean all the pig cr*p. I politely said NO - I would continue to watch from outside the fence.

He had a 12 foot rear blade on a second tractor to do the cleaning - Man, I've never seen snow roll in front of a rear blade like that pig poo did.

STINK - it was so strong an odor that you could "taste" the odor sitting out on the back lawn at his house - half a mile away.

I was truly surprised at the size of his pig barn. As the pigs finished eating they would stroll back into the barn - out of the sun. It was some God-awful mid 90 degrees and the humidity was racing the temperature towards 100.

C fever,
I can't argue with that.:)

Does anyone know if there is a book on historical barns? I would love to take a barn tour vacation to see some of these old, beautiful structures some day.
hugs, Brandi

See American Barns: A Pictorial History: Jill Caravan: 9781561384716: Amazon.com: Books There are quite a few books out with such titles as "American Barns: A Pictorial History" etc. Just go to Amzaon.com and search on barn history. They'll cover you up with choices.

Sorry, no one is going to believe your story without a picture of the barn.

:laughing::laughing: Spoiled cows...now I have heard it all.:D I have electrical and concrete in the center of my barn. So I'm 2/3rds the way to a garage. ;) The center area is more a shop and work area. The stalls are off to the side and they are dirt.

Many years back when I built the cow barn and a pig barn/pen. I needed to make it easy enough for my wife (city girl turned farmer almost) and my young kids to feed and take care of the animals without me. (I work long days/nights and sometimes weeks in a row.) That's why my animals thought they were at the Waldorf Astoria. But, a five year old kid could feed the pigs/cows without a problem. I look forward to retirement so I can enjoy the animals. 3.5 years and counting if I can keep the government from stealing my cash.:)

WELL - Cat Fever, I'm sure not going back to Omaha to get a pic. We are having record breaking heat wave right here - I can imagine what Omaha is like. Ha,ha,ha

Can't blame ya there. Been hot and dry at my house a long time. Sure would like to see some rain.
Your avatar at least has water in it. Mine has dust.

Yes - I have a 5 acre lake - the avatar - and part of a 120 acre lake. However, what the avatar does not show is 80 acres of grass so dry it turns to dust when you walk thru it. At least your avatar has nice green grass. Right now - and for the last two days - its been hazy and smokey here also. There are active wildfires burning in all directions of the compass. I get real nervous when I see the big cattle rancher - my abutting neighbor on the south - move all his cattle to a location that is safe from wildfires. He lost a several outbuildings and a nice barn in the wildfire that came thru here last year.

Its time for me to put on my fluorescent yellow shorts and go out and do a rain dance - or whatever it takes.
