I'm looking for a disc for my food plot and I was looking at this I know they don't make good heavy implements and this one looks like it wont cut the ground to good so what is a good brand my tractor has 44hp.

Don't see what kind you're looking at. I have an Everything Attachments 24/20 and it's nice and heavy. I'm running 52 HP.

But it really depends on your soil conditions.

With around 5,000 pounds tractor weight and 4-WD you can pull a Disc Harrow with 22" diameter pans, possibly 24" diameter pans. With heavy, notched pans you will be able to cut through almost anything. Price on heavy Disc Harrows are $3,000 and up, new.

ETA makes fine equipment.

Monroe Tufline is "big ag" quality.

Brown Manufacturing is another top name in heavy Disc Harrows.

You will want a Disc Harrow no wider than your tractor's rear tires when gangs are fully extended, therefore slightly narrower than tire width when gangs are in operating position, on the slant.

I recommend 9" pan spacing plus notched pans front and rear for food plots. This is the cutting/penetration configuration.

Then a Disc Harrow with 22" pans will be enough, rather than 24" pans.

I've never heard of this rule before. My rear tires are less than 6.5' wide, at 60hp, I can only have a 6' or 6.5' disc? That sounds crazy.

Lots of people using 7, 7'5" and 8' discs with a tractor this size. Of course ag tractors run discs MUCH wider than their rear width.

1. Weight is your friend in Disc Harrows. Weight is much more in the pans than the frame, so determining pan diameter is first criterion.

2. For food plots Disc Harrows are pulled on slopes and between trees. For food plots you do not want a Disc Harrow wider than the rear tires, preferably a bit narrower, or you will often get stuck with the tractor through obstacles but not the long implement. On slopes, extricating the Disc Harrow can be difficult, sometimes dangerous. (Ask me how I know.)

3. When discing food plots few people find it practical to make more than one pass.

4. For field use, where the field is disced regularly, some people prefer pans spaced 7" or 7-1/2" apart for greater float / less draft resistance and a smoother finish. If mixing stubble, 9" pan spacing is preferred. Or 9" spacing between pans on front gang combined with 7" spacing on rear gang.

There is less draft force resisting the tractor with 7" pan spacing so it is easier to pull a 3-Pt. mounted Disc Harrow 12" - 24" - 36" wider than the rear tires.

Of course ag tractors run discs MUCH wider than their rear width.

Towed Disc Harrows, not 3-Pt mounted Disc Harrows.

Take time to read the LINK in Post #3.

Ah, I see. The food plots I've worked are an acre or two and never something where I'd worry about the disc sticking out a foot on each side. You must have some narrow plots!

Narrow tree gaps, food plots are in open hardwood forest.
