Starter bendix pin came out

Went to start the tractor the other day, and the starter just spun without engaging the motor. Took the starter out, and it looks like I lost the pin in the bendix:



What do you recommend doing with this? Looks like new ratchet style bendix is around $40 -- should I just put a new one in while its apart?

If I try to put the one I have back together, I'm a bit puzzled how to get the spring compressed, etc. I've watched the videos on spinning it with a bench grinder wire wheel, but its not making sense yet.

Which parts am I missing? I pulled the plate off the bottom of the clutch housing, and only came up with:



Looking at the parts catalog, it looks about like what I have:



I then spun the engine manually, and did not hear anything interfering. Wondering if I need to did around some more. I'd rather not split the tractor.

your bendix appears to be missing parts.

plus that cotter pin was in the plate.. no? it should have been.

quit digging and just put a new bendix on! you are way overthinking this.

OK, new bendix on order -- that is what I needed to know.

The cotter pin was laying on top the plate so I'll put a new one in the hole.

and remember. to install the new drive gear, you can move your vice jaws wide enough to allow the starter shaft to pass, but catch the gears washer end.. yous your upper arm to apply down pressure on the starter ( with it facing down and supported by your other hand ). when the holes line up, slip the pin in and then release pressure.
