Took video of workers gravelling road shoulders on my street this morning

Looks like those guys knew what they were doing. I thought the title of your post, "gravelling road shoulders" was interesting, though, when the John Denver video came up next, the first thing I thought was he was going to sing "Sunshine on my shoulders".

I'd say about four times faster than most workers

They sure are organized and doing a good job. Amazing in a way though that it takes about 8 guys and a half dozen vehicles worth about a million bucks to put down gravel. That said, they did a great job.

NC has started to put down gravel alongside the road bed on rural roads because so many people were crashing their cars and getting hurt and/or killed because of the grade was so far below the top of the road bed. Some of our rural roads are very narrow yet heavily traveled and it is very easy to run of the side of the road. There is one major road near our house that was really bad for years and I would only drive that road if I had no choice. They road has since been widened and the road edge graveled but I still only drive on it when I have no other choice. When this road goes into another county, the road is dramatically wider.

It really is surprising that more people have not died on these narrow, yet high speed roads, especially when there is a 6-12 inch difference between the top of the road and the road grade.

A couple of years ago the two counties I drive in the most, put down gravel on the side of the pavement and they did it very quickly and compacted it as well. Very impressed at the job and how fast they got it done. We just had a strange spurt of repaving in the county were many of the major roads had projects running at the same time which was really stupid because of the traffic problems that were created. But the roads are in better shape including the shoulders which were kept level with the new road bed.

Indeed I did...and why would you ask that question? My comment was based on the fact that my father spent his life in construction, much of which was paving and road work, both as a Superintendent for contractors and later in life as a city Street Department supervisor. Competent contractors are as a rule, hard nosed, no nonsense business men who don't waste a lot of time and money leaning on their shovels. I remember his comments concerning the ineptitude of some of the City Street Department employees, i.e., "These guys are out there running heavy equipment and they can't even read a grade stake".
