Charities - SECOND NOTICE rant

We seem to get a lot of solicitations for fallen Police Officers...

Thing is we are a family with a fallen Police Officer whose name is on the Memorial and nothing has EVER come our way and I let them know it.

Police and Fire Fighters are NOTORIOUS for soliciting funds from outside their own areas. They rarely, if ever, say from where they are calling. If you don't ask - you may well be donating money to a group that is hundreds of miles away.

I recently ordered the phone below for my mom. You can set up a list of numbers that are allowed to ring plus block the ones that come up unknown. Hopefully that will eliminate these calls. These phones are getting neat, the next model up has bluetooth so can be paired to a cell phone. No need for a land line and you can talk while your cell is charging.

Not sure if Mom would be up to it...

She still has a rotary dial and a push button ATT phones in the house...

Bought her a cell and a cordless before... she gave the cell to the grand daughter and never used the cordless...

Good idea though...

My mom can't deal with cell phones but she is ok with cordless. The buttons and screen on this one seem decent sized. I deal with my mom's finances and hate it when she gives me papers saying she said she would give some money or buy some silly DVD's because they conned her into it. The Bluetooth thing was for more techy people who no longer have a land line (or want to ditch it) but still like the comfort of a cordless. Pretty neat features on these phones.

When a charity calls I just ask how much of every dollar they raise actually goes to the group they are calling for. The caller usually puts the phone down and a manager picks up. They are required by law to tell you the breakdown. Most are 5, 10 or 15 % at the most. I decline and they do not hassle me. After doing this for a while the robo calls stop because I drop off the list.

Great suggestion ! IF I ever pick up the house phone again and get a solicitor, I will use it !

If I get a sob story, a second notice, or any other panhandler type correspondence I shred it. Never have received a 2nd notice but should it ever happen they probably won't get another penny. And if I contribute only to suddenly get a number of new requests for assistance that ends it for me.

I see causes that I'd like to support but they want you on the "monthly payment plan" so they're off my list as well. The "business" of charity may just be its undoing.

No take the self addressed returned envelope (pre paid of course) and stuff the other mailings in it and send it back to them.

Yup, I've about 10 of those, in 3 different houses. I find the bluetooth pairing well worth it. SWMBO usually leaves her cell in her purse. It's a LOT easier answering a phone kept handy then trying to find her purse.
