In a world where
  • spy satellites can read a license plate,
  • license plate scanners record every plate that passes,
  • law enforcement is using "Sting Ray" equipment to eaves drop on cell phones,

I find it astonishing that folks are all het up about privately-owned drones.

Someone firing onto someone else's property is something you support? NRA guidelines prohibit irresponsible, illegal behavior.

You show me where I said I support that and I'll apologize. Otherwise, stop PM'ing me and telling me to be a man, Tom. Its getting ridiculous how you're accusing people of saying things they never said. Either you seriously mis-read many posts or you are intentionally trying to pick a fight. I suggest you go back and re-read every post in this thread and try to find where anyone has supported shooting into or over someone else's private or public property. No one has. You are mistaken. Own up to it and lets move on from this nonsense.

Awesome video! I just got my first drone (Syma X8C) that my wife found at a garage sale for $25. I had been wanting one for a while but didn't want to spend the $$$. It's a great, cheap, learning quad until I can get the hang of it. I hope to get some good use out of it, learn a lot, and maybe upgrade in a year or two so I can take some good quality video of our land and some of my family member's land. I won't post any of my video so far, since it's so crappy! :)
A friend of a friend out this way bought one (X5C) last winter to check his roof after all the snow we got (nearly 10' in Boston proper). You can't put a guy up a ladder for $100.

Taking pictures in a public place is one thing. My backyard is not a public place. Keep the toys in their own yard. I bought my place for the quite. Not to have someone decided their toys should be allowed to trespass on other peoples property.

The drone is no different than if I went for a walk through my neighbors backyard taking pictures of his wife and daughter sunbathing in their fenced backyard. Also, you are showing the world what is in my yard and what I am doing.

One persons idea of fun does not trump others privacy rights at six feet or 250 feet.

I couldn't have said it better.

And that's the current dilemma... "public place" hasn't been defined very well as it pertains to drone usage and photography/videography. Some people get furious if you stand in the road and take a picture of their house, or take a picture on a sidewalk and they are in it. Things like that have been defined many times over the years as public places. Not so much with overhead yet, but I bet its coming to court sooner than later.

I have been interested in photography since junior HS and love shooting things but not people (too shy and not a spy). But I was encouraged (dang photo assignments) by my first photography teacher to go out and shoot people! This was hard to do for me. But he always said the best thing to do was go up and tell the person you would like to take a picture and ask if they minded. Made some friends and even made some money not trying. A great way especially in a foreign country to get past the touristy thing and interact with real people.

I'm not good enough with mine to inspect the roof. Nor is the 2 megapixel camera good enough. I'd likely have to repair the roof if I got close enough! :)

...I wish I could post some other 'stuff' but I would like to keep my day job!

One of the cool features now in testing are the firing of large capture nets from Quads for military/law enforcement.

Ah shucks, you can post some pics here and I'm SURE no one would rat you out! :D

I'm certain you know a lot more than I about the state-of-the-art with drones as my info is mainly from what I read online. But when one watches video such as this one, or this video, it doesn't take a lot of imagination to think of the potential for harm that could also be inflicted by these types of systems.

And unless they're keeping it under wraps, I have to believe that all manner of law enforcement agencies simply don't yet have any kind of mechanism available to thwart a threat from drones. When that little "hobby" drone landed on the White House lawn it caused a MAJOR kerfuffle with politicians falling all over themselves to criticize the lack of security when in reality, there are very limited options available as a defense from a "drone attack" of some kind. You can also be sure there's a large population of bad guys looking to ways to use these things to carry out their own agendas as well.

Here is what was posted for those of you that seem to have missed it.

I am planning on overflying the PROPERTY OF OTHERS when and if I get a drone. Although it is largely unpopulated and it will be at an unobtrusive altitude.

We are building a rifle range and I realized that if I had a drone I could overfly the range fan and insure that there were no camps or homes in it before we set the final direction of the firing lane..

In context he would be droning over other people's property whether he was worried about hitting someone with a ricochet or direct shot. If it were HIS PROPERTY, why would he need to fly a drone over it to see if there was a home there?

Exactly what I need to fire at a low flying drone. Losing their toys would probably stop repeat offenders.

You left out the best part.

someone crashed their car into your house (which probably happens 1,000 times more often) do you get to keep the car?

No doubt someone here will take offense, because internet.

No doubt legislators are using such concerns already to pass more laws instead of citizens just walking over and asking their neighbors to stop being a ******.
