What does "routine maintenance" consist of on these? Oil and fuel filters hard to find?

With a little research, you can find filters that will fit. But, when you get to other things like brakes, water pumps, and such, will be much harder to find, or match to parts available here in the USA.

Have a look at licensing an RTV. There is a guy here with valid tractor plates on his! He also has a revolving beacon and a caution triangle on it too. Im guessing that he somehow got it road licensed as a tractor! Dont know how he did it, or how he got liability insurance for the road, but he makes no bones about it and drives in the (entire) right hand lane, not pulling over to let you by

The funny thing is that the importation rules (at least here in Canada) say the trucks have to be at least 15 years old...which guarantees they won't include the most up-to-date Japanese emissions and safety features.
We have a local seller, but these 15-20-yr old trucks are $6k to $8kCD (which would be $4500 to $6000 US). The one I was thinking of is a private sale for $3k.

They are getting a little hard to find but have you looked into getting a Suzuki Samurai? Parts are easier to get, they are pretty rugged.

I paid $1100 for my Samurai with a noise in the trans... $50 in parts and a new clutch disk and it has been flawless.
It is my off road vehicle and I can drive it on any highway when needed... only down side is every 2 years it had to pass inspection... so far so good.
