2003 John Deere 160 LT (42 Freedom Mulching Mower)
Each year I have owned the mower, I have had the blades sharpen or replaced, but the quality of cut has gone way down hill. Again, this year they were sharpen, but I did ask if they needed replaced.
I was told that they were in very good shape and only needed sharpening. After moving two times the mower seemed like it was not mowing correctly.
Again, it seems like not all the grass blades are not being cut. In fact the mower cuts the grass better going backwards instead of forwards. I have taken it to two different John Deere service places (last 2 years) and still getting the same result.
Any thoughts? Thank you.

:welcome: to TBN

How long ago were the new blades put on the mower?

Have you personally inspected the blades and the underside of the mower deck?

Hope we can get to the answer to the problem.

It has been about five or six years ago that I replaced the blades in the 160 LT.

I saw the blades after they were sharpen. Also, cleaned out the underside of the deck for grass build up.

I'd go for new blades... a smooth cut might be worth the money...

And be sure the adjustment to the deck is up to snuff. Right air pressure in tires, correct level right to left, and correct front to back diff of 1/4" ( lower in front). Plus the deck is carried off the ground by the tractor.

All are important.

It is worth a try getting new blades. It has been a good lawn tractor. Starts always, but does run well at full throttle. Just back it off and then it is fine. Thank you for the advice!

but does run well at full throttle.

Does, or does not ? I assume you meant "does not" run well at full throttle. Maybe a slight carb adjustment?

Are you sure the blades are installed the right way? A lot of people put them in backwards. They will cut with the dull edge, but not very well.

Also, make sure the deck is leveled correctly. Front edge should be a little lower than back on these decks, if I remember right.
