I am looking for a mower rotary or flail to reduce standing corn stalks. I would like to be able to turn debris over with my two bottom plow or rototiller. Not talking about a lot about an acre. Use to cut and put thru chipper but father time is creeping up on me. Thank for your help.

Because of the heavier nature of cornstalks, I believe a rotary mower is the better choice. Not saying a flail wouldn't handle an acre of stalks, but I've never known anyone to use anything other than a brushhog.

It all depends on how much you value your time and how
much money you want to spend.you can pick up good
used flail mowers at municipal auctions.
You may want to look at a small sickle bar mower too as
that would cut right to the ground and then you could just
use the rototiller tilling at right angles to break up the
hard pan ridges and be done.

A rotary cutter will be A LOT cheaper than a flail beefy enough to do a this right. The cut quality of a flail will be moot in this use case, which is usually a strong point. That only leaves the safety factor which you can mitigate by not having anybody around when you now.

Flails are often better, but probably not in this case.

finish mower. and just deal with sharpening blades afterwords. 1 acre... is like a large size garden. just get out there with lawn mower and just mow it down. and run over it all a couple times to mulch the stalks up better. most likely first time running deck as high as you can run it. then next pass run it lower. if stalks are getting caught up, take half passes (half the deck width).

listings at tractor house stalk choppers, did not look through the listings, but guessing most of them are for much larger fields.

I run my 6' rear rotary mower over the corn stalks, then plow with my single bottom 18" plow with coulter. You can barely see anything left on the surface. I just do a garden, but an acre wouldn't take a whole lot longer.

That sounds like a man looking for an excuse to buy a Caroni flail mower. ;) "But, honey, the guys on TBN told me that was the only tool that would do the job." :D

Congrats on the new Caroni.

Received my flail mower yesterday from agri supply took a little while to get it but it finally arrived they even took $100 off of the shipping cost because of the delay. Thought that was nice of them. I had ordered spare parts and had them a week before mower. Looks like top quality and plenty of meat.Had to cut seven inches off the pto shaft for correct fit.Gave everything a shot of grease even the two inside the belt cover. Gear box came with oil already in it. Finished chopping my corn and i cant believe what a great job it did really nothing left. This was the right choice thanks for the input
