Cold, poor penetration, ugly and not that strong, Might not have to hold anything more than a plastic cup or aluminum can so it might be just fine for what it has to do.

I like that pic, Shield! Nothing that a few more passes, followed by a 4-1/2 grinder, wouldn't fix. Or have I been doing it wrong? :shocked:

My old man always called me a pilet welder. Just pile it here and pile it there. That being said that first one is not something I would be proud of.

You know generally it only takes a couple hours with someone with a little experience to make big improvements in welding. Last spring I helped a mechanical engineering student build a bike frame for his class project.
First picture is his first aluminum Tig weld, (The first few inches on the right is my weld).
Second picture is what he was doing a couple hours later.

The weld in the first post looks like someone trying to weld material far too heavy for the welder. Plus dirty metal and a poor ground. I once tried to weld some ¼" bars on the bushhog with an 85 amp welder that didn't look much better than that. It held, but I'm still embarrassed to look at it.

Very nice of you help with that, Shield. The quick improvement of the student is a reflection of your talents as a teacher.

Oh I don't believe in charging. When I started out, I got all kinds of help. I never ran into anybody, even guys in other trades. That when I ask why, and how they did things, they always took the time to show me. So now it's my turn to pay it forward.

Oh this kid is very smart. Just like the members here who have come to my shop for welding lesson. They are smarter a sleep, than I am on my best day.

Heres that bike frame we made for his senior class project. He got an A for it!
