so it isn't like nobody knew this was hanging out there,

Yeah that might be the most shocking part... that VW knew they were busted 1 1/2 years ago and did nothing. They continued to build and sell the same cheaters.

GM knew for years that their switches were defective and killing people but did nothing about.
So VW's case pales in comparison to GM's.

Point of fact, UL does not certify anything, they approve or pass an item for use.

VW deserves what it gets. They knowingly set out to deceive the consumer, the EPA, and knowingly marketed their diesels as clean, when they knew they could not meet the criteria.
And though no one died or was seriously injured, smog and air pollution via diesel particulate matter is a serious health hazard, as France is aware regarding paris. Let these cocky crooks fry!

Actually, they could and did meet the criteria. That's proven by the fact they passed the stationary emissions tests. They simply turned the controls off when they were not being tested.

The sad part is that innocent VW stakeholders will be punished for the bad judgement of a tiny faction within VW. Workers laid off, suppliers gutted, stockholders induced by deception, dealerships too. Rather than just collecting a huge fine from VW, prosecutors should pinpoint the Deciders in this fiasco and claw back their "performance based" wages and bonuses. Sell their mansions, if necessary. That, combined with jail time, will dissuade others, while not hitting the innocent stakeholders quite as hard.

A chip which produces 'fake' results to fool the tests is not the same as passing a test. If they could pass the EPA requirements there would be no issue, and no need to tweak the data.
