VW Clean diesels.... how did they get them so clean?

A chip which produces 'fake' results to fool the tests is not the same as passing a test. If they could pass the EPA requirements there would be no issue, and no need to tweak the data.

Others have corrected you. They passed the test when in EPA mode.

Yeah, by providing fake results. Passing is NOT the issue, how they passed is. That's why the sale of any cars affected by the 'chip' tweaks engineered in on purpose are not moving off the dealer's lots. What's your problem anyway?!

I often wondered how our passat ( 2012 ) could use so little DEF. You literally forget about it until the light comes on.

It'll be interesting to see the scrutiny other makes will get now. I would be immediately suspicious of brands that use vastly different amounts of fuel compared to the EPA numbers.... cough cough FORD

My problem? i go with the facts that have been reported, not speculation by 'Internet Experts'.

VW has admitted they violated the law. They have frozen sales of their own vehicles because they don't meet EPA and internaional standards. I don't see what the issue is. You're defending something even the culprit says is indefensible.

A scandal that has battered Volkswagen’s image in the United States spread to the automaker’s core market in Europe on Tuesday, when the company said that 11 million of its diesel cars were equipped with software that could be used to cheat on emissions tests. That was more than 20 times the number of cars previously disclosed.

Mr. Winterkorn issued a video statement on the company’s website, saying that the misconduct was a result of “the grave errors of very few” employees, and promised to cooperate with officials on a “ruthless examination” of how vehicles were programmed to evade emissions tests.

The carmaker’s announcement on Tuesday was its first admission that diesel cars outside the United States contained the software that led the Environmental Protection Agency to accuse the company of deliberately evading pollution tests. Previously, Volkswagen had acknowledged only that the problem affected about 500,000 vehicles in the United States.

Volkswagen officials admitted to officials in the United States that diesel cars sold there were programmed to sense when emissions were being tested and to turn on equipment that reduced them. At other times, the cars had better fuel economy and performance, but produced as much as 40 times the allowed amount of nitrogen oxide, a pollutant that can contribute to respiratory problems including asthma, bronchitis and emphysema.

Volkswagen AG admitted to systematically cheating U.S. air pollution tests, leaving the automaker vulnerable to billions in fines and possible criminal prosecution.
The company sold diesel versions of Volkswagen and Audi cars with software that turns on full pollution controls only when the car is undergoing official emissions testing.
During normal driving, the cars pollute 10 times to 40 times the legal limits, the Environmental Protection Agency said. EPA called the technology a “defeat device.”

It would be interesting to know what difference to performance/economy was actually achieved by turning the anti-pollution gear off.

Before you toss out accusations, you need to actually read what I wrote.

Please quote where I;

1. Defended VW.
2. Said they didn't admit wrong doing.
3. Said they meet EPA standards, both during test and normal driving..

FACTS
1. The vehicles MET EPA STANDARDS only when they were being tested, i.e., when they were in 'EPA mode'.
2. The vehicles DID NOT MEET EPA STANDARDS when they were in regular use mode.

This isn't complicated. The code in VW diesel ECMs could determine when they were plugged into emissions test equipment. When they were, all the pollution settings were functioning and they passed the emissions tests.

When they were not plugged into emissions test equipment, they disabled all their pollution settings.

They can't sell vehicles because the default ECM mode is no pollution controls.

You claimed they passed the EPA testing. Evading a test and passing a test are not the same thing. This so called "EPA" mode is only active when the vehicle is on the dyno. They are certifying that this is the normal operational state of the vehicle, which they know it is not true. When you say things like the "passed" the test, the inference is that you are defending what they did.

IF that's not what you meant to imply, then what is the point/purpose of claiming they "passed" the EPA tests?

They commiitted an act of fraud. They advertised and sold a vehicle that did not have qualities they claimed it had except under limited circumstances that could not be replicated by any consumer operating the vehicle on the road. And under those conditions, the vehicle did not comply with federal emission laws.
