Internet in the Country

I make my 1.3 DSL work... best I can do right now and this is inside the city of Oakland.

Ultrarunner, call Sonic.net. They serve various parts of the East Bay.

They recently got rights to resell ATT's Uverse, which is 24mbs DSL from your neighborhood box, that is fed from fiber. I just got this, several miles west of Santa Rosa. The rural version is claimed 11 mbps and I actually see over 13mbps. I'll write about it here, after a few days experience.

I put in a couple of addresses and it said "We are not there yet"

Will check back

In Windstream territories , we have launched our new tier of high speed DSL back in August. New speeds of 25Meg/4Meg 50Meg/8Meg 75Meg/8Meg and 100Meg/8Meg are available in many markets. The first number represents the download speed and the second number represents the upload speed. Of course your location has to be qualified for these new higher speeds. Keep in mind folks, telecom companies would like nothing better in the world than to be able to sell you the fastest speeds of broadband possible. It seems some of you think telecom companies are just mean and depriving you of the broadband you deserve and were promised. Nothing could be further from the truth. All telecom companies want to give you the best possible service. It is always a matter of money.

Hah.... it is in their money interests not to upgrade rural services. They are making millions having people captive to 3g-4g environments with their data caps and limits.

One need only go back a few years with the term - "unlimited". Yeah...right....

That makes no sense what-so-ever. The type of service/speed available has absolutely nothing to do with data caps. The fact is, anyone with cell coverage has a lot of options. Those without have far less options, but options none the less. If one chooses to live in an area far from civilization, they would be a fool to not realize they’ll be doing without things that those closer to town have available. It’s a choice you make. No one is under any obligation to spend tens of thousands of dollars to give you cheap high speed internet. If anyone really thinks high speed internet is a “necessity” (which is laughable), perhaps you’re not suited for rural living.

It's exactly this type of mentality which holds the USA back. Higher speed technologies allow growth in many different areas of private/public and government services.

And there are limits to services and speeds. Perhaps you can explain your statement a little better?

Perhaps you can clarify yours. What do data caps have to do with providing fast internet to every human being in America?
And how does not having cheap, high speed internet to every known address “holding the USA back”? Businesses that need high speed internet have enough sense to build where it’s available.

It's actually the uninformed/underinformed that holds the USA back. For a Telco to build out infrastructure to rural areas is just not a profitable venture. Yes, we are in the business to make money. This is the very reason the government is now subsidizing it with the CAF. This will offset the cost incurred by the Telco's and bring a minimum 10 meg to the rural areas. I live rural and I knew going in that the HSI I was used to in the city was not going to be available to me in the country. You have to be realistic about it. And to blame the Telco's is just ridiculous.

The infrastructure is limited. Data caps ensure it's availability and accessibility.
