Reprehensible Welding?

An old Scottsman I used to know that built steel fishing boats used to refer to that as "snot"!

Interesting, over the years I have seen some really crappy looking welds that have held up for decades when it LOOKED like they would fall apart with any load at all.

However, I have also seen some MIG welds that at first glance look like a fine weld but had zero penetration.

Guess if it were all looks we wouldn't have to X-ray or dye penetrant welds to see what really happened.

It looks like he either welded hard wire without gas, or he used a HF 110V 90 amp flux core welder. lol.

It looks similar to welding without gas. Trying to weld a piece of RR track which is cast iron to steel looks similar.

Railroads mostly switched to hot rolled steel rails near the end of the 19th century.

Save that antique cast iron rail. :)

Aahh come on, all that weld in the first post needs is about 3 or 4 cans of spray paint sprayed on and it will look great.
