New 2017 Super Duty

Too much aluminum. Too many electronic gizmos (face it...that truck has more electronics than the entire NASA mission control did when we landed on the Moon!).

Not enough V10 :(

But I'm old school....if I won that thing in a raffle, I'd sell it the same day....and I'm a Ford guy.

It will be worth the wait! I'm hoping to replace my '08 in 2-3 years. I'm interested in seeing the numbers for the gasser to determine if I go back to gas or stick with diesel.

Good friend of mine traded his Duramax for a gasser GM HD couple years ago. He's impatiently waiting for it to age to the point he can stand to trade it back to a diesel.

Figure I've got 4-5 years left in my '00 before facing the big decision. Unless something dramatic happens in that time I'll go back to Diesel.

Went on a 400 mile round trip last weekend pulling 25K lbs of truck/GN trailer/2 Jeep Buggies. My Son was in the convoy with his Gasser pulling a car trailer with one Buggy. I got 11 mpg, he got 7 mpg. I pushed him up the hills or ran off and left him if in the lead. I rarely turned over 2200 rpms. He rarely turned under 2700 rpms. I'd hate to go back to that. :)

I only tow about 9500lbs of fifth wheel, so I don't tow that much, or very often. On good days, I get 10 mpg towing, but I've seen as low as just under 8 when towing my fifth wheel to Branson. Of course, I've got the first of the DPF-equipped vehicles, and I'm sure they have improved since then. But, gassers have improved a lot as well. I love the way the diesel tows, but if I could get an EcoBoost in the F250 and sacrifice a couple MPGs loaded for cheaper fuel, cheaper maintenance, and lower up-front costs, then I will definitely consider it. If there is no forced induction gasser when I'm ready to buy, then I will likely be back with a diesel.

Good points. Some observations: What you might see on the road working are often purchased from the 'low bidder' and doesn't always represent the best 'quality' purchase. So, a good reason 'not to buy what the government buys'; or fleets, etc.

In Houston for many years the top producing fleet salesman was at Knapp Chev. He had a system for being able to bid exactly the lowest price on almost any fleet RFP that was available. Delivered more vehicles than any other salesman at any other dealership in Houston year after year. Speculate all you wish as to why but the 'low bid' always got the business.

.

I'm a municipal sales rep for Case. I can tell you, "low bid" does not always get the bid. I'm low bid most of the time, but the specs are written in such a way to be specific to a brand or model of machine, and if you dont meet spec you dont get it. I'll tell you that most of the time what a town/city/municipality buys comes down to the relationship with the local dealers and the parts/service way over the actual product.

I'm old school 7.3.

Looks really interesting. The high hoods on today's trucks are horrible when you're off-road or in some other tight spot, and this looks even worse than the current Superduty (which we own.) I think I'm gonna add a front camera and wire it in to the rear cam display via an aftermarket device like the LockPick. On the cosmetic side, all I can say about these two-bar chrome grills including our own new truck: Yuck.

Looks interesting. That grill is hideous though. And that plastic air dam is just looking to be torn off on the first trail ride...

Someone mentioned 8 and 10 speed. Are they finally going to offer a stick again, in a Fuller/Eaton? That would be sweet instead of all these automatics forced upon us...

I'm old school 7.3.

Me too... x3!

I must say, I do like the looks of the 2017's better than th'11-current looks. So much that I even showed the picture to my wife... who asked if I thought I was gonna get a new truck. Would be nice, but I'll keep my ol' 7.3's going for quite some time for what a new one would cost.

But they do look nice... in 10 years when there's 100k on a used one, I may own one.

Edit: please give us manual trans again!!!!

Wonder what a starting price is going to be?

It never ceases to amaze me how much emphasis people place on the looks of a truck and ignore the track record of mechanical problems. And the testers never get to see the real world as they drive it a few miles while it's brand new.

If they can get their engine finally worked out, that might be a very nice truck, but it needs a tilt front to access that big turboed V8. They are really pushing the aluminum body, but it costs twice as much to fix as steel, so up go the costs, again. I have to laugh at the "military grade" sales pitch. I guess writing Super Duty all over it wasn't good enough, now we'll be seeing "military grade" written everywhere.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could buy a simple reliable diesel truck at a reasonable price? That is, without buying a used 7.3 or an old Cummins.

It looks like the new F150 and a new Silverado HD had a baby! A lot of similarities to both truck in that body design.

I really like it.

Ha...agree

I just purchased a 2016 F350 Crew single platinum. The sticker was $71,000 I didn't pay that, but from what I was told the 17 super duty will be about 12,000 increase. I didn't believe it tell my uncle got a brand new 2016 F150 platinum with the aluminum body. He paid $65,000. I told him geez you paid more then I did for my f350 crew single platinum with the diesel. Thats why I went with this last year style vs waiting.

The Al is criticized, but every Super Duty around here that is 5 or more years old has the wheel arch rust. Most times the rest of the truck looks good otherwise. The new aluminum bodies could be a big improvement for those of us in the rust belt.

Hopefully the price will drop to something reasonable. They thrive on fleet sales, so I imagine they will maintain the work trucks at low pricing.

The wheel arch rust is a design/quality problem and not a steel problem. The engineers take shortcuts that favor cost savings over longevity in the salt belt. I would feel better about Ford's competence with aluminum if I hadn't seen so much failure in their use of the stuff over the past 14 years.

Yeah, that's me. 10 yr old, 100K mile truck is right up my alley. :)

You don't even have to wait 10 years to find a 100k mile truck. Give them 2-4 years. I had a local dealer stick a 07 Silverado half ton with 364,000 miles on the lot and expect to sell it. Now what kind of idiot would buy that?

/ New 2017 Super Duty #38
Wanna buy my 6.4L in 3 years? It'll be 10 years old and have about 80-85k on it then. :)

I sure wouldn't recommend it. Right around 100k is when the two 6.4s we had started having issue after issue. I know a lot of others that had the same experience. We had several 6.0 fords with issues prior to that. Couldn't give me a ford diesel that wasn't a 7.3 right now. YMMV.

That sure is ugly. Looks like they forgot pieces of the grill surround from a distance.

And the dually......who designed those square fenders with round flared lips???

Glad they already scared me away with their diesel engines.

At least the F-150 and the 5.0 L are still nice.

Like HHR said it was a design flaw in the wheel wells. But Dodge and Chevy are not any better. I have a friend with a 2004 Dodge that lives in s garage and is hardly driven. He has rust on the bed around the wheel wells. They only last so long with the salt up morth
