I saw a 2 inch hydraulic hose give way on a machine once. No warning, it just popped, it sent a jet of hydraulic fluid over 20 feet in seconds. Nobody hurt, but it scared the crap outta a few folks.

Yep hoses do break. Seems like its about a million times more likely to pop while under use, than while sitting. Has anyone seen a hose pop while engine off?

Anyway back to the point that those people under that hoe are probably in no more danger than those who ride in automobiles. Its just different mannerisms. I still wouldnt do it, and those people would be disscussing my superstitions in an unfamiliar language (thats a 3rd world style forum! ), and they'd be mostly correct too. Only thing for sure is they are in the shade and I'm out in the sun risking sunstroke etc.

What about sitting under a big tree? I saw two people on the news last night killed in in separate accidents by falling trees.

I was working in Russia about 35 years ago. I was invited to visit a guy I worked with to his apartment in high rise building, While there being alone for few minutes in the living room I walked on the balcony. When his wife saw me there she almost fainted. When I returned back to the living room they showed me how the balcony was attached to the wall. Then I almost fainted. You would use bigger anchor to hang a small shelf. Then they showed me a pile of balconies by near by building. One in about eight story let go and took all below it with it.

when my buddy went to peru for a few months, he watched some people doing roofing, they would lay a ( something like a 2x4 ( or dimensional 2x4 ) made of mohagany ) they would lay one down and walk across it from edge to edge , etc. no osha..
