I recently had someone offer to trade me a 1946 Lincoln Short hood welding machine for a zero turn mower I am selling. I know very little about these welders, but I would like to put together a nice welding trailer for the farm. What can you tell me about these machines? I'm a little concerned about its age, but I also realize that some older stuff is better than modern mfg stuff. What is the case here? Any and all info most welcome!!! Thanks

I have heard they are sweet but others will know more than me. ED

Those welders are nothing but junk!:D
In your neck of the woods those welders sell very high!
I have a 1954, 1966, and a combination machine. It has a 1974 engine, 1970 generator, 1948 frame, and sheet metal.

How does it weld and does the idler work? What value is your mower worth? The welder looks to be in great shape. Do you have any pics with the doors open? If the welder runs as good as it looks it's worth a few thousand bucks. Plug ins would be DC only and not be very high amps. Maybe not the best welder for a farm but a overall a very desirable machine. See if you can get the serial number to confirm the year.

Arc, your post is right on... efficient use of words to ask the right questions and provide comment. Respect given

I second Shield arc and arc weld on their comments mentioned above, whether you are getting a good deal or not really depend's on what your mower is worth and how well the welder run's and weld's. We live in pipe liner country and the short hoods are very desirable and bring very high prices. I sold a early 50's short hood last year that I picked up cheap, repaired, and sold it for a very hefty profit the following week. The one in your pic is much nicer than the one I sold.
