Hi,
I am going to be doing my 50 hr. filter's and oil changing and was thinking of switching to synthetic oils and was wondering if anyone else has gone this route? Would there be any problems with using synthetics in a tractor and do you know if it would is cause any warranty issues?
Thanks

If the oil meets or exceeds the specs, it's OK.

I switched to synthetic in my 1st tractor @ 13 hours. Next one @ 50 hours. Switched an old Gravely to synthetic, and it quit using oil.

Went with synthetic, Rotella T6, at the 50 hour change in my CK30hst. That was 10 years ago and all is good. Just make sure whatever brand you use is for diesel engines. I use the 5W-40 instead of the 15W-40. Makes Winter startups easier.

I use synthetic oil in everything I maintain especially my tractor. Royal purple and 50 hours then Rotella synthetic after that.

Interesting. I've never used synthetic oil. Curious what it is about it that causes the engine to burn less. Or leak less, if it's a seal problem.

Thanks to everyone on the info.

If your tractor is that new that it is at its 50hr service the manufacturer may specify which synthetic to use. I use Rotella T6 5w-40. Works great.

It's usually the other way around. I just switched my company truck from full synthetic to a semi. It used 1-1/2 to 2 quarts between changes at 5000miles with the full. Now with the semi it has stopped all together. with 30+ years of turning wrenches and the last 20 working on hydraulics this is just what I have found in most cases. I run synthetics because of the temps we get here in the winter aids in startups. But usually will increase oil consumption and is harder to keep in the machine [leaks]. CJ

Agreed CJONE. Synthetic oil has more consistent size molecules as opposed to dino having a lot of different size molecules mixed in.

Yea, I was always told by a couple of friends [petroleum engineers] that the molecules are smaller that's why the leaks are more common but that's why it flows better in extreme temps. Makes sense to me. I have had a lot of experience with turbo Buicks and for some reason these v-6's did not like the synthetic oils once they got some miles on them. Usually low oil pressure. A change to a good conventional oil almost always cured the issue without running a thicker oil. If the engine was whipped it did not matter but most of the owners were happy. CJ
